OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT[edit | edit source]
The outpouring of the Spirit was at the feast of Pentecost, the 'Feast of Weeks' (Lev.23:15-23), fifty days after Passover when Y'shua was offered as the sacrificial Lamb on our behalf.
It fulfilled the type illustrated in the feast. They were to count the days from Passover and then offer the firstfruits of the wheat harvest to Yahweh. Two loaves baked with leaven to symbolise the two houses of Israel, Judah and Ephraim not yet cleansed from sin. Yahweh had attempted to bring them into this covenant at Sinai, which was the first 'Pentecost' (Ex.19:1- 3rd month) but they had run in fear from the manifestations of the Spirit and said, "Let not God speak with us" (Exodus 20:18,19).
Their disobedience and failure to enter in caused them to sin and come under judgment and as a result 3,000 souls died. Now, at this time, through the new covenant, Israel entered into it and 3,000 were saved on that day.
"And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days" Joel 2:28,29
This is a prophetic word given as a hope for the future restoration of Israel through the new covenant which He would establish with them. He also says "I will send you grain, and new wine and oil, and you will be satisfied with them"
These are spiritual types used - grain speaks of spiritual food, wine is the joy of the Spirit, and oil the anointing for ministry and service. (Joel 2:19) Joel's prophecy is of the impending judgment, the time of Yahweh's future wrath and the deliverance/salvation from it for those who call on His Name.
John the Baptist prophesied regarding the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, saying "He (Y'shua) shall baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire" (John 1:33), and he did this in the context of "fleeing from the wrath to come" (Luke 3:7 &17), speaking of the fire (Yahweh's wrath) which would consume "every tree which does not bear good fruit" (Luke 3: 9) Luke further quotes John as saying, "He will gather the wheat into His barn, but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire" ( Luke 3:`17)
John thus links the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as this outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh of which Joel prophesied before that great and terrible day of His wrath. This is the salvation/deliverance by calling upon His Name.
Note. Joel uses the plural 'days', more than one prophetic 'day' - i.e. it spans from the birthing of the kingdom to the 'day' of it's full manifestation in the kingdom age. Y'shua said, "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever - the Spirit of truth .. .." John 14:16,17.
Y'shua prepared the disciples for this saying, "Wait for the promise of the Father, which He said, you have heard from Me, for John truly baptised with water, but you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." Acts 1: 4,5
On the great day of the feast, the day of the 'Great Hosanna' at the pouring out of the water (which had been brought up from the Pool of Siloam for the ceremony) upon the altar, Y'shua cried out, "He who believes in Me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive, for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Y'shua was not yet glorified" John 7:37-39
At the time of this prayer ceremony for natural water for the harvest, Y'shua spoke of the rivers of living water which were to flow from the throne of Yahweh for all who were thirsty, to come and drink. "For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, to whom He said, 'This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest,' And, 'this is the refreshing';" (Isaiah 28:11). Peter interprets this manifestation on the day of Pentecost as a fulfillment of this scripture, calling them to repent, "so that the times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord." (Acts 3:19). Peter thus establishes that the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in 'tongues' is the prophesied 'stammering lips and another tongue' through which the times of refreshing would come from the presence of Yahweh, of which Isaiah spoke, concerning these times of refreshing to come. Paul also confirms that the manifestation of tongues is confirmed by this scripture. 1 Corinthians 14:21
We have therefore two apostolic confirmations of tongues being the prophesied manifestation of Isaiah 28:11.
THE SEAL OF THE COVENANT[edit | edit source]
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the seal of the new covenant. Yahweh always gives those who enter into covenant with Him a seal as a guarantee of the promises made. To Abraham He gave the seal of circumcision. Romans 4:11
A seal always has an outward manifestation, the Spirit's manifestation is in the various gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
A Seal signifies: 1. A finished transaction Jeremiah 32:9,10 2. Ownership Jeremiah 32:11,12; 2 Timothy 2:19 3. Security Ephesians 4:30
"In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise " (Ephesians 1:13)
"Who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee" 2 Corinthians 1:22 and, "hereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption" Ephesians 4:30 The seal of the Spirit is in the form of a deposit, a down-payment, an initial installment of the fullness to come in the kingdom age which will be the full inauguration of the new covenant. Now, we are pressing into the kingdom and entering into our inheritance as sons, forerunners and potential firstfruits of the harvest. 2 Corinthians 5: 4, 5
We are - "Made partakers of the world to come and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come." Hebrews 6: 4-5 The Holy Spirit is given to bring us into the powers of the age to come. Ephesians 1:13-14
Paul describes the experience of being sealed with the Spirit as "the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession" (Ephesians 1:14). The word 'earnest' means a 'pledge' or 'an assurance'.
Paul is referring to a custom wherein if a man purchased a field he would take a spade full of earth from the land as a pledge that he owned the land and would be back to take full possession of it in the future. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is the proof that we have received a portion of the inheritance of the new covenant power and glory. The immersion (baptism) in the Spirit is the earnest or pledge from Yahweh that the whole inheritance has been legally enacted and the believer is entitled to it when Y'shua returns, if he endures to the end.
THE HOLY SPIRIT OPERATION IN BAPTISM[edit | edit source]
It is the Holy Spirit (the Ruach HaKodesh) Who moves over our lives to cause us to turn to Yahweh. It is His ministry to convict us of sin and Who breathes new life into our hearts, immersing us into the Body of Y'shua.
Being a manifestation of the godhead, He has personality and is described as such. He is the presence and power of Yahweh and Y'shua speaks of Him in the personal pronoun 'ekeinos', as for the personal representation of the Father.
He can be Grieved - Ephesians 4:30
- Vexed - Isaiah 63:10
- Resisted - Acts 7:51
- Provoked - Hebrews 3: 7-9
- Insulted - Hebrews 10:29
- Lied to - Acts 5: 3
- Tempted - Acts 5: 9
- Blasphemed - Mark 3:28-30; Matt.12:31-32 & Luke 12:10
He knows the things of Yahweh - 1 Corinthians 2:11 Isaiah 40:13 He searches all things - 1 Corinthians 2:10 He performs the work of Yahweh - Genesis 1: 2; Job 33: 4; John 3: 5; Romans 8:11 He convicts of sin - John 16: 8-11 He speaks - Acts 13:2; 28:25-27 - Isaiah 6: 8-10 He teaches and instructs the believers - John 14:26; 16:13-15 He distributes the gifts - 1 Corinthians 12:11 He comforts/Counsels/helps - John 14:15 He Guides - John 16:13 He gives revelation - 1 Corinthians 2: 9-11; John 14:20; 15:26; 16:13 He glorifies Y'shua - John 16:14
PURPOSE OF THE SPIRIT BAPTISM IN THE BELIEVER[edit | edit source]
TO REVEAL Y'SHUA To Us It is the ministry of the Spirit to bring to darkened hearts and minds the reality of Y'shua, that the eyes of their understanding may be enlightened 2 Corintians 4: 3-6; Ephesians 1:18
To also bring Revelation from the scriptures 1 Corinthians 2:12, to know the things given to us Guides us into truth John 16:13 Teach and bring things to mind John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:13 Personal guidance and direction Acts 13: 2; Mark 13:11
In Us Gives inspiration for worship John 4:24 Philippians 3: 3; Ephesians 5:18-20 Divine strength through His love poured out in our heart Romans 5: 3-5. The life of Messiah in us, working out through our personality, is called the fruit of the Spirit Gal. 5:21-22 & John 17:26
Through Us There is an empowering of the Spirit - "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you" (Acts 1:8), and be "endued with power from above" (Luke 24:49) Previously they had authority in His Name, now effectual power is released through them Now, 'they turned the world upside down' Luke 10:18-20 & Acts 1: 8: 17: 6
They had - Power to witness - Acts 1:8; 4:33 Power to Preach the Word - Acts 4:31; 9:20 Power of Agape love - Acts 7:60; Romans 9: 1-3; 5:3-5 Power in prayer - Jude 20 Ephesians 6:18 Spirit directs in prayer, He makes intercession for us, enabling us to pray according to God's will Romans 8:26-27 Spiritual gifts (charisma) - 1 Corinthians 14: 1; 12: 5 Spiritual impartation of gifts for ministry - Ephesians 4: 7-8; 11-12
"These signs shall follow them that believe: in My Name they shall cast out demons, they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover."
"And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs." Mark 16: 17,18, 20 In the outworking of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit's) impartation to the believers there are dramatic changes in their lives and ministries. Peter, one who even denied Messiah beforehand, now preaches boldly in the temple, they are like men filled with new wine. (Acts 2:14-39, v. 15)
The Spirit of Yahweh lifted them beyond the natural into the 'supernatural' in their preaching - Acts 3: 8; 6:10 in their praying - Acts 4:31 in their guidance - Acts 8:29, 26; 9:10 in transportation - Acts 8:39 in protection/deliverance - Acts 12: 7; 28: 5 in miracles - Acts 5:12-15; 6: 8; 8: 6,7 in visions - Acts 7:55
Paul preached the gospel "In mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God" Romans 15:19 As did the other apostles Acts 2:43; 5:12, also Phillip the evangelist 8:13, and Ananias, a brother (Acts 9:17-18).
"God bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will" (Hebrews 2: 4). In all, they had evidence of something beyond the natural capabilities of man, theirs was not normal preaching, teaching and praying, it was the 'dunamis' power of Yahweh released in mortal vessels by the Holy Spirit.
