English: Victoria Cross Winners of the Indian Mutiny 1857 - 1858
Portrait of Sergeant Major Cornelius Coughlan VC, a veteran of the Indian Mutiny. Colour Sergeant Coughlan served in the 75th Regiment (later The Gordon Highlanders), British Army during the Indian Mutiny. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, aged 28, for the following action:
"On 8 June 1857 at Delhi, India, Colour-Sergeant Coughlan gallantly ventured under heavy fire, with three others, into a serai occupied by the enemy in great numbers and rescued a private of their regiment who was severely wounded." An account of his bravery on 18 July in the London Gazette read: "Colour Sgt Coughlan encouraged a party who hesitated to charge down a lane raked by a cross-fire, then entering with the said party, into an enclosure filled with the enemy, destroyed every man; for having also on the same occasion returned under a cross-fire to collect dhoolies [early stretchers] to carry off the wounded."
Queen Victoria felt moved to write a personal letter to Sgt Major Coughlan on hearing about his act of bravery.

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.
Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
