Description
Portrait of Michiel Adriaensz. de Ruyter, at knee-length, standing in front of a red curtain and a balustrade. In the background a seascape with De Ruyter's flagship De Zeven Provinciën. De Ruyters rests his right arm on a globe, while holding a baton in his right hand. Around his neck he is wearing the Order of Saint Michael. On the table the globe is standing on lies a map showing the coastline of Holland and Flanders with in the middle the island of Walcheren, where De Ruyter was born. Part of a series of six identical portraits of Michiel Adriaensz. de Ruyter of which four have survived.
