Flowering serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea or Amelanchier laevis) in a meadow within the Pine Swamp tract of Bald Eagle State Forest, Centre County.
Pine Swamp is a large, forested, spring-fed wetland at the headwaters of its namesake stream, Pine Swamp Run, in a mountain basin. The wetland lives up to its name; white pines dominate the forest—usually in pure stands, but sometimes mixed with other tree species (hemlocks, pitch pines, and hardwoods). Grassy, lightly wooded meadows are found in the soggiest areas.
