Summary

Description
English: Lesser burdock (Arctium minor) I think this is the lesser not the greater burdock (Arctium lappa); they both possess the familiar hooky seedheads that attach themselves so readily to clothes and fur and are said to have inspired the invention of velcro.

The generic name, Arctium, comes from the Greek arctos, a bear, from the roughness of the flowerheads. As well as medicinal uses the roots and other parts are edible, see http://www.celtnet.org.uk/recipes/ancient/wild-food-entry.php?term=Burdock and it was also used for an old-fashioned fizzy drink, Dandelion and Burdock. In Midlothian the burrs have a particular function in covering the Burry Man at an annual pagan ceremony, see http://193.62.154.38/celtica/Burryb.htm

Seen here on rough ground beside a farm track.
