Summary

Description

example to be used in the wikibook about LaTeX. As sample, I have used three featured pictures of Commons, renaming them just to make the code look simpler. They are:

Image:Gull portrait ca usa.jpg --> gull.jpg
Image:Mus_Musculus-huismuis.jpg --> mouse.jpg
Image:Siberischer_tiger_de_edit02.jpg --> tiger.jpg

I saved them in a local folder and then I created a file called subfig_test.tex and I put the following code in it:

\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}

\usepackage[english]{babel}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{subfigure}

\begin{document}

\begin{figure}
  \centering
  \subfigure[A gull]{\label{fig:gull}\includegraphics[width=0.3\textwidth]{gull}}
  \subfigure[A tiger]{\label{fig:tiger}\includegraphics[width=0.3\textwidth]{tiger}}
  \subfigure[A mouse]{\label{fig:mouse}\includegraphics[width=0.3\textwidth]{mouse}}
  \caption{Pictures of animals}
  \label{fig:animals}
\end{figure}

\end{document}
then I compiled it with pdflatex thus getting subfig_test.pdf. I opened it with acrobat reader, I took a snapshot of it with GIMP and I cropped the part I was interested in, saving in PNG. I optimized it with optipng.
