Summary

Description Structural formula of the azo group, R-N=N-R′. In this image, it is depicted as the trans isomer, but a cis isomer is also possible. The labels R and R′ typically represent organic substituents, such as the phenyl group. However, they can be defined in text accompanying the image if a different meaning is intended. For example, if R = R′ = H then then this image would represent diazene (diimide).
