Upper endoscopy (also called gastroscopy, EGD, or esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is a procedure that enables a surgeon to examine the inner wall of the esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) . A bendable, light-emitting small tube about the size of a small finger is passed through the mouth into the stomach and duodenum.
