Ingredients[edit]

Base[edit]

Topping[edit]

  • 2 sliced, soft-textured apples
  • splash of grapefruit or lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • ¼ teaspoon powdered ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons baking mix or biscuit mix
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar

Procedure[edit]

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. For the base, manually mix the baking mix, egg, brown sugar and spices in a glass or ceramic bowl (a table knife will work).
  3. Rub the butter into the base mixture with your fingers - the mixture should not be sticky.
  4. Line an 8 inch by 8 inch (20 cm by 20 cm) baking pan with parchment paper.
  5. Press the base mixture into the bottom of the baking pan (you might want to press it up the sides a little).
  6. Put the sliced apples into the bowl and splash with the grapefruit or lemon juice, tossing the sliced apples to distribute the juice evenly.
  7. Mix the dry topping ingredients together in the cup.
  8. Add most of the dry ingredients from the cup to the bowl, tossing the contents to evenly distribute the mixture.
  9. Tip the lightly coated apples into the baking pan, try to have a fairly level layer of apple.
  10. Sprinkle the remaining dry mixture on top of the apples.
  11. Bake for 30 minutes at 375°F (190°C).
  12. After allowing it to cool, you can lift the slice out of the baking pan by the corners of the parchment paper and put it on a plate for easy slicing.
