The Seafoam Islands are a series of large caverns, located off the coast of Cinnabar Island. They are found in the Kanto region (Pokémon games Red, Blue and Yellow, as well as FireRed and LeafGreen). They also appear in Gold, Silver, and Crystal to a limited extent.

The islands are composed of a series of maze-like caves which the player must navigate in order to continue on in their journey to Cinnabar Island (for the first generation of games). However, it is possible to avoid this area entirely by first returning to Pallet Town, and then surfing south to Cinnabar Island. This route is primarily used by players who are travelling from Cinnabar Island back to Pallet Town but there is nothing to prevent the player from traversing this route in reverse to reach Cinnabar.

Pokémon found

Many Water and Ice-type Pokémon are found in the Seafoam Islands, but it is most visited for the legendary bird Articuno, as it is the only place in the game where it can be caught.

Appearance in Gold, Silver, and Crystal

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the Seafoam Islands are present, but they are much smaller and less maze-like than in other games. Since Cinnabar Island (and thus its coast) was destroyed by a volcano eruption, Blaine, Gym Leader of Cinnabar, had moved his gym to the Seafoam Islands. Articuno can also not be caught in the smaller version of the Seafoam Islands, due to Blaine occupying the entire cave, and due to the fact it had already been caught by Red in the old games.
