Celadon City (タマムシシティ Tamamushi Shiti, Tamamushi City in the original Japanese) is a fictional city in the Kanto region in the Pokémon series. It is the second largest city in the region, and is roughly based on Yokohama, considering its location.
Places of interest
[edit | edit source]Department Store
[edit | edit source]The Celadon department store is the largest Pokémart in Kanto. Because it is larger, it has a large variety of items that are not found elsewhere.
There is a vending machine on the roof; it sells water, soda and lemonade. All three drinks function much like Potions. In Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, the player must present a bottle of water to convince a guard to allow him/her into Saffron City. In addition, a girl on the roof will give the player Technical Machines in exchange for drinks.
Mansion
[edit | edit source]The Celadon Mansion is a large apartment building in the north side of the city. On the first floor of the Mansion, in all versions of the games, lives its owner, an old woman, always surrounded by several of her Pokémon. In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, the player can obtain an Eevee in the small apartment on the top floor.
Game designer Game Freak placed members of the development team in this mansion. After the player has completed his or her Pokédex (obtained all 150 Pokémon), the Game Freak designer will give the player a diploma as a reward for finishing the game. However, contrary to popular belief, the conversation ends here. The game designer will not give the player any Pokémon or any gifts and will only present this diploma.
Gym
[edit | edit source]The leader of the Gym here is Erika. She trains grass type Pokémon. In the anime, she also sells perfume from her gym. A peeping tom also lurks in front of the gym, ogling the young women inside.
Game Corner
[edit | edit source]At the Celadon Game Corner, players may play casino games using a currency of coins. These coins can be redeeemed at a shop next door to redeem prizes, such as rare Pokémon or Technical Machines.
Below the Game Corner is the hideout for Team Rocket, which you can enter by pushing a switch underneath a poster. In the hideout, you have to defeat the members of Team Rocket and the head of the organization, Giovanni. This hideout does not exist in Gold/Silver.
Hotel
[edit | edit source]In Pokémon Red and Blue, there is a hotel in the southeastern corner of the city. Players can access an invisible PC at the far edge of the room, a glitch. This glitch exists because this building was originally going to be the Pokémon Center. The invisible PC was removed in all later versions of the game (Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen).
In the anime
[edit | edit source]Celadon appears in "Pokémon Scent-Sation". It is home to perfume shops and perfume companies, including Erika's own Pokémon gym. Anyone that insults perfume or tries to steal stuff in front of Erika is forbidden from the Pokémon gym. In that episode, Ash challenges Erika to a battle, which is interrupted by Team Rocket attempting to steal Pikachu.
