Sootopolis City (Rune City ルネシティ; Rune Shiti) in the original Japanese version) is a fictional city in the Pokémon series of games. It is located in the Hoenn region. One can only enter the city the first time from underwater. Sootopolis is built in the cone of an extinct volcano. The last Gym is located here, as well as the Cave of Origin.
In the video games
[edit | edit source]In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, you go to Sootopolis City when the weather in Hoenn is too hot or when it's raining hard (depending on the version). The goal is to find and defeat Groudon (in Ruby) or Kyogre (in Sapphire). In Pokémon Emerald, there are many more tasks to do. You go there when it is raining, and set off to the Sky Pillar to find Rayquaza, which then fights off the other two, and Sootopolis City is much safer. You get to see the only in-game cutscene in all the Pokémon RPGs for Gameboy Color and Advance so far.
Major characters
[edit | edit source]Wallace
[edit | edit source]Wallace is the Gym Leader of the Sootopolis City Gym in Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire. Wallace is a self-proclaimed artist who uses Water Pokémon, the strongest being his Lvl. 43 Milotic, which can be easily taken down with a powerful Grass/Electric attack. This may be a breeze, as Groudon/Kyogre are Lv.45 and you will most likely have a strong Grass Pokémon, as you probably couldn't get into the Gym anyways without one! The Grass type may have a problem though, as Wallace/Juan also commands Ice type.
Juan
[edit | edit source]Juan is the Gym Leader of the Pokémon Gym in Sootopolis City in Emerald version. Like Wallace in the Ruby/Sapphire versions, Juan uses Water-type Pokémon. In fact, three of his five Pokémon are the same (save for level change) as Wallace's original Gym battle team. He is Wallace's old mentor, and is filling in for him while he is champion. In the Japanese version, his name is Ardan.
Cave of Origin
[edit | edit source]The Cave of Origin is a fictional cave in the Pokémon series. It is located in the Hoenn region, at the north end of Sootopolis City. It is guarded by Wallace/Juan of Sootopolis Gym and is said to be a cave of beginnings where life begins. It's opposite landmark is Mt. Pyre, said to be the place where life ends. Residents of Sootopolis are not permitted to enter the Cave of Origin.
Sootopolis City in the anime
[edit | edit source]In the anime, Juan is the last Gym Leader that Ash has to battle. His Gym is very stylish, especially compared to the swimming pool of the Cerulean City Gym. The Gym battle goes over two episodes.
- In Part One, they have a double battle, which ends when one Pokémon is knocked out.
- Part Two is a standard 3 vs. 3 battle.
Demographics
[edit | edit source]Like Mossdeep City, Sootopolis is very large in size, but has a smaller than expected population. The population of Sootopolis is only 25, which is mostly because the majority of the builidings in the city are uninhabited
