There is a user who just started a major Wikibooks project that you should be made aware of:

I've tried to encourage this author to move the content to this project instead, but I would also like to know if you would be interested in helping move it here, or even if you think it is a good candidate for this project.

WB:RFA

About my RFA. When I came onto this wiki there were two contributors, and both admins were inactive (your last contribute was in october and Michael was rarely here). The only 'crat had edited three times. This wiki was basically inactive. I came here and some general housecleaning needed to happen (bad redirects needing deleted, ect). However, no one was here to do that, so I went ahead and requested adminship. I also wanted the only other two active editors here to run for adminship so we could get something done. Then out of the blue you came back. I'm still here to help set up this wiki and I plan on being here after to continue to contribute. Also, I know you don't using vote in approval for users with less then 1000 edits and three months experience. First, I have over 4000 edits and more then three months experience on the English Wikipedia. Second, I have attended over 180 edits within a day. Continuing with the Simple English Wikipedia's RFA standards, you have only attended 340+ over the course of a year and four months, with the edit count being under the SE Wikipedia's standards. Regarding the three months; the SE Wikipedia has an extensive collection of policies, which is why they probably want a user to have been there for three months; so they can learn all the policies. However, this wiki had only a few policies when I came here, which can eliminate the need for the waiting time. I hope this gives you some thought over the current RFA at this wiki. I've created the category Category:Speedy Deletion Candidates which will help with deleting pages. The template {{db|reason for deletion}} is used and it automatically places the page in that category. Regarding the PulltoOpen account. That account appears to only be here to disrupt RFA, such as stating how we shouldn't use {{support}} and {{oppose}}. It appears to be a single purpose account. Changing the "article" tab.

What would you think about changing the "article" tab on the top of most pages to something just labeled "page"? It's more simple and I feel more accurate. This user has been blocked multiple times on the english and simple english wikipedia. She was blocked for revealing too much personal information/creating sockpuppets. She has been classified as a cross-wiki stalker, mainly to another user named Phaedriel, to whom she has sent abusive e-mails. I'm just saying, this user is not the kind of person we want on any wikimedia project.

Is there any reason why you don't want to block her? From what I see, she has made little (if any) helpful contributions here. But, from another point of view, I suppose it doesn't really matter since she doesn't even edit here anymore. --Is is 13:18, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He was blocked for stalking users, especially female admins. From what I've read about this, he actually found real-life adresses of some wikipedia users. This is serious. Merger with en.wikibooks

We've started a discussion at Wikibooks:Simple_talk#Merge_this_project_with_en.wikibooks.3F about possibly starting a merger between this project and en.wikibooks. As one of the more active users on this project, and as the more active of the two admins here, I would really like to get your input before we start making a bigger issue out of this. Two users here, User:Ezra Katz and User:Wikihermit have already agreed to the proposal, in general. I would like to see much more support for the issue before anybody does anything about it.

I really want to be clear that this isnt any kind of a hostile take-over. I'm not attempting to belittle this project, or to make light of your accomplishments here. However, it's really my belief that everybody would benefit from a combined english bookwriting project. En.Wikibooks does have categories and tools available for keeping simplified english books organized. In addition we have a large staff of regular users who patrol for vandalism and perform other maintenance tasks that can't be performed as regularly on a smaller project.

There is also the issue on the table of adminship. I think most people from en.wikibooks would be willing to either grant you adminship directly, or to fasttrack an adminship process on en.wikibooks for you, so that you could keep a watchful eye over the simple english books. If you werent interested in taking on adminship responsibilities on the larger project, or if you wanted time to acclimatize yourself to the project before applyng for adminship, that would be acceptable as well.

I really want to hear your opinion on this matter, I think it is an excellent opportunity for both our projects to come together and grow. --Whiteknight 01:51, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Admin Status

I would like to revisit the issue of admin status on SEWB.

I have the support of the community. Three of the top editors here have supported my request for admin status (and in such a small community that is significant). You are the only one who has voiced any objection, and hopefully, since I have been consistent in my presence here, some of your concerns should be resolved.

I have been just as responsive to changes on this wiki than the administrators, if not more so. The long delay in administrator response especially on issues related to the merging of this project are inexcusable. The recent idea to merge this project is of real concern. With the current state of this project, there is absolutely no reason why we couldn't be writing these textbooks on English Wikibooks with more support from an active community, more publicity, and better access to wiki features like templates and scripts. It is for those reasons that I even advocated a merge.

Out of respect for those like yourself, who would like to keep this project alive, I want to stay and help. In order to make this wiki viable a have a couple ideas.

All pages need to be in Simple English including talk pages and admin pages. Usability is a key quality that distinguishes us from EWB, and a non-native speaker of English should have access to the entire wiki. A good transition would be to come up with a template that could switch between regular English and Simple English. I think this could be done using collapsing tables, but in order to implement it, I need access to the admin tools to modify the css and try a few approaches.

Advocacy is another thing lacking. I actually was introduced to this project through the OLPC Algebra book and made my first contributions on EWB. If it wasn't for the One Laptop per Child project I wouldn't be here. I would like to go to that project and ask for some support, be it from experts in language who could help come up with guidelines for what vocabulary list would be best or from their community for basic publicity. I also see SEWB as a place where the students and teachers in the countries using these laptops can come to collaborate on texts and learning materials. I'm sure there are several other organizations who need Simple English material, and we need to seek them out. In order to be a proper advocate for this wiki, I need to be able to make changes to in a timely manner, like creating distinct namespaces when needed. Also, as administrator I would have more credibility when communicating with outside organizations.

I plan to flesh these ideas out further and make a proper proposal on the wiki, but I wanted you, as the main advocate and guardian of this project, to know what I want to do as admin.

I would appreciate it if you would honor the vote of this community and grant me admin status. If you still disagree we can bring this discussion to somewhere else to resolve, but this needs to happen in a timely manner. We have already lost momentum here because of delays. Without significant changes this project will remain redundant to EWB and be in constant criticism.

I hope you've seen the new logo announcement I made in the Simple Talk. I'm in need of a spanish translator to pass the message on to es.wikibooks. Is this the kind of thing that you can help with? Let me know if you are willing and able.

And on a personal note, I hope there are no hard feelings about the merger thing. I only started it at all because I perceived simple.wikibooks to be relatively quiet, because en has some books in simplified english, and because I wasn't aware of the previous deletion attempt. I'm a wikibookian at heart, and all I want is for the wikibooks project as a whole in any language, to succeed.
