[edit] Little Venice
I recently watch a video called "Venezuela: Petroleum Powered Economy" (Princeton, NJ: Films for the Sciences and Humanities, 1992) in which the narator states that Vespucci named the country Venezuela "little Venice" because he saw people in Lake Maracaibo controling their boats with long poles like how they do in Venice. - How can you have one third plus two thirds PLUS four percent of the population ?!? A population of 104% it's too much, isn't?
1/3 and 2/3 are understood as approximate. It's not like it's a big deal. "every year 21 babies are born" was a big deal until I figured out that was for every 1000 population, which was not obvious from the way it was phrased. A much, much bigger deal was the 81% of the population works, which is just dumb. That's simply not the way employment statistics works. Just because there's 18% unemployment doesn't mean there's 81% employment, let alone that 81% of the population works.
And this is to say nothing of the white supremacist racism which I've ripped out of there pronto. Or the revisionist "Hugo Chavez is responsible for the actions of his enemies" which just makes me want to puke. 70.26.56.242 20:51, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
