Wikibooks talk:Dewey Decimal Classification
From Wikibooks, the open-content textbooks collection
[edit] Categorisation of the Miscellaneous Bookshelf
Individual books can be done on a case-by-case basis:
- For example, the Voynich Manuscript is 090.
- The Joke Book is 'English humour and satire' which would be 827.
- Genealogy would be 920 or more specifically 929.
- Gardening would be 712 (landscape architecture) or 719 (natural landscape).
- Dog Care would be in 636 (animal husbandry: thank you World Book Pathfinder).
- Errata would be in 000 (Generalities). Or maybe, at a stretch 165 (fallacies and sources of error).
- The Interest System would be 153 (Mental processes...intelligence).
- Message Passing Interface would be 005 (Computer programming).
- Outdoor Survival would be 639 (hunting, fishing).
- Puzzles would be 794 (indoor games of skill).
- Project Management would be 658 (general management). From its content it looks to be on the IT bookshelf, and thus a number from 000-090 would be more appropriate.
- Van Dwelling 388 (transportation: ground transportation).
- Getting a boy/getting a girl would be in 176 (ethics of sex & reproduction), or in the 170 range. A long shot would be 390-399 specifically 395.
- Merit Badges would be 267 because the Scouts are a place of religious work (or rather were!). or 367 because they are a general club.
- 'With respect to kinds of persons': what exactly does that mean (especially in relation to Wikibooks)? Is that a place for biographical textbooks in the field? What, then, is the significance of 'kinds' of persons?

[edit] Dewey Decimal has legal problems
Some jerk claims copyright on it, and has been collecting money. It's safer to go with the Library of Congress classification.
Yeah, maybe you learned Dewey in 3rd grade or something, oh well. Libraries are converting; wikibooks should too.
- The copyright situation for the Dewey Decimal system is very confusing. There is an office in the Library of Congress that is dedicated to classifying content submitted to the U.S. Copyright & Trademark Office for formal copyright registration, and that has full-time employees who work not for the U.S. Government but instead for OCLC, the organization that currently "claims" copyright over the current Dewey Decimal classification system. But the classification codes they assign to books are public records. And the Library of Congress has dedicated librarians who do nothing but help with the assignment of classification codes that go into the Dewey Decimal Classification System. So is it a government publication or not?
- One other thing that really throws a monkey wrench into the situation is that the original classification system, including the major 100's level categories, was established in 1876, and this is clearly in the public domain as something with an expired copyright. Lower level classification codes have obviously kept up with changes in society and technology, although there are some obvious flaws with the system as it is now an antiquated coding system in many respects. With 130 years of usage, any classification system would have some problems but in this case it has held up surprisingly well.
- Obtaining the full classification books may be quite difficult to do, but the documentation down to three digits is fairly widespread and even given away on the OCLC website. (Free as in beer, not in freedom to copy and reproduce).
- I don't see a significant reason not to use the classification system here on Wikibooks, after doing some considerable research on the subject. This is only going to be one of several classification systems used for Wikibooks, and if OCLC wants to go after us, we can simply delete this page with a nasty note that we had to get rid of this content due to a legal dispute. IMHO it would be to their best interest to not only allow this classification to continue, but to encourage it and offer assistance in classifying Wikibooks. See also the article on Wikipedia about this topic. --Rob Horning 04:56, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Moving content from main page
Content that was mainly organizational in nature is being moved here instead, to reduce the clutter on the main page. Feel free to edit and maintain this content as needed, or even create sub-pages to deal with this content. --Rob Horning 05:07, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dumping all of the WIkibooks on the main page of this module
To simply get things started, I'm going to try and put all Wikibooks on the main page. It may end up far too unwieldy, but let's see just how far we need to go. Moving the content to sub-pages is going to be trivial compared to simply trying to classify all of the current set of Wikibooks. --Rob Horning 05:41, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
