[edit] Goals

Volunteer members of Wikipublish help to do the following:

  • Create printable versions of existing books
  • Create PDF versions of existing books
  • Keep track of legal information needed to publish books and enforce copyright
  • Distribute books
  • Register fixed editions for ISBN or other identification numbers, if possible.

Other tasks of this project may involve the creation of other distributable formats (LaTeX, or HTML, for instance), and the possible physical publication and distribution of books. These aspects are still under discussion.

[edit] Creation of fixed editions

The credibility of books in Wikibooks will be greatly enhanced by the creation of fixed editions of completed books. At the request of editors fully mature books may be reviewed by the Editorial Board and saved as a fixed edition that will be kept permanently. It is the goal of Wikipublish to move completed books towards the status of "fixed editions".

Fixed editions can be created physically by saving the book as a uniquely named pdf then policing the file image to ensure that it is not updated. Fixed editions should have "wbedition1_0_" or "wbedition2_0_" etc. prefixed to the name of the pdf ie: chess.pdf would be saved as "wbedition1_0_chess.pdf". The active books themselves can continue to be improved and even have updated pdf files in the original name and, after alterations have become significant, the editors can ask for an updated fixed edition to be saved.
