Wikibooks:Transwiki Imports

Import is the process of importing content from an external Wikimedia project to English Wikibooks.

[edit] General Policy

Previously, transwikis from other projects were done by copying the page, then pasting it into a module on Wikibooks. When done properly, the talk page included either a copy of the contribution history or a link to the page history on the other project (though this was often not done). This is still the way transwikis should be undertaken when moving pages from projects which Wikibooks does not have import enabled, or when an import fails.

Because of the obvious advantages of using the import tool (it's much easier, and brings the contribution history along which is more compliant with our copyrights), copy-paste transwikis are no longer permitted, unless import is not enabled for a project or the import failed. Instead a request should be made using the request for import page. An administrator will than import the page if possible.

When a copy+paste transwiki is found where an import has not been tried previously, a message should be left on the editor's talk page and the transwiki page deleted. If the module has been worked on since the copy-paste, administrators may instead simply import the page, merge it into the module that exists now, and then restore the most recent version. This may require finding an administrator on the target wiki to temperately undelete the page.

[edit] Import procedures

All imports should generally be made into the transwiki namespace. If there is no module with the same name as the page name, it can be imported directly into the most appropriate namespace. If there is a module with that name, it should be imported into the transwiki namespace instead (Special:Import will merge any already-existing page at the destination pagename with the imported page).

Once a page is imported by an administrator, several other steps should be taken:

  1. Indicate whether the import was a success or failure on the WB:RFI and after a week remove the request.
  2. Clean up the module to confirm to Wikibooks standards or add {{subst:twwp-2}} to the page, which adds three cleanup templates. This can be performed by anyone. The performing administrator is not responsible for doing it.

[edit] Cleanup tasks on Wikipedia

While not required of the importing administrator, there are other templates available on Wikipedia that can be used to take the article out of the "Copy-to-Wikibooks" and "How to" categories.

On the article page, the following templates can be used, as a replacement for the Wikipedia templates:

{{Copied to Wikibooks}}
{{Copied to Wikibooks Cookbooks}}

The former adds a link to the destination page in the transwiki namespace (which will hopefully soon become a redirect), while the second adds a link to the cookbook article (used only for articles imported directly into the cookbook namespace).

On the talk page, the following templates can be used to invite the authors of the wikipedia articles to come help improve the wikibooks forks:

 {{subst:howtobook}} ~~~~
 {{subst:nowbook}} ~~~~
 {{subst:nowcookbook}} ~~~~
