Books are cataloged using categories to aid browsing through the Wikibooks:Card Catalog Office. This page explains how to catalog books into the three cataloging schemes: alphabetical list, the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and the Library of Congress (LOC) system.

[edit] Alphabetical listing
Wikibooks maintains an alphabetized index of books. To ensure books are alphabetized, add {{alphabetical|<CHARACTER>}} to a book's main page. Where <CHARACTER> is the first character in the book's name. For example Using Wikibooks includes {{alphabetical|U}} at the bottom of the page.

Wikibooks maintains an index of books using the major categories of the Dewey Decimal Classification. To ensure books are indexed, add {{DDC|<CLASS>}} to the bottom of a book's main page. Where <CLASS> is the Dewey number, rounded to the nearest hundred.

Wikibooks maintains an index of books using the major categories of the Library of Congress system. To ensure books are indexed, add {{LOC|<CLASS>}} to a book's main page. Where <CLASS> is the character code for the major LOC category.

Take First Aid. This book sets an example of a book that has been fully and properly cataloged. First Aid includes the following code:
- {{alphabetical|F}} - Files in F in the alphabetical system
- {{DDC|600}} - Files in Technology (Applied Science) in the Dewey Decimal system
- {{LOC|R}} - Files in Medicine in the Library of Congress system
All this ensures that no matter how people browse Wikibooks, they will be able to find First Aid.
The time taken to catalog books correctly will pay off with more people finding it, reading it, and contributing to it, so don't ignore this critical step when you create a new book!
