Dementia is a word that means the brain is losing its ability to work normally. This is, given the current state of Medicine, essentially permanent, though medications can dramatically slow certain types of dementia down "to a crawl".

There are several types of dementia (like there are several kinds of automobiles), the most common one being Alzheimer's Dementia.
