[edit] My honours thesis
- This message is not being automatically archived
Well the title was "Permutation Codes, Frequency Permutation Arrays and Constant Composition Codes for Powerline Communications". Call it high level would be wrong I think, since it was only an undergrad thesis. As per honours thesis instructions at my university, it's geared toward 4th year mathematics students who haven't taken any courses in coding theory, and so there's a good introduction to the topic. I graduated June this year. Currently looking for work. Here's a pdf of the thesis http://rapidshare.com/files/59765051/honoursproject1.pdf.html . Hopefully it will be useful. (Bengl 14:53, 2 October 2007 (UTC))
- If you do a section on constant weight codes, then pretty much all of it can be used. Other than that, I think the intro is quite useful as a general introduction. The section on application to powerlines would be more applicable to one of your other books. So if you think something should go somewhere, let me know and I'll go ahead and insert it, so that my name shows up in the edit history ;). (Bengl 15:21, 2 October 2007 (UTC))
-
- Cool, I'll probably get to that some time tomorrow. Also, I had a similar paper on Reed-Solomon codes, but i can't find it. (Bengl 15:32, 2 October 2007 (UTC))
[edit] Wikibook policy question
- This message will not be automatically removed
Hi. What is the wikibook policy regarding online books on the web released under GNU Free Documentation License such as this book. Is there is any way to upload this particular book on wikibooks? Our own Linear Algebra book is in a bad state and this is an excellent substitute.--Shahab (talk) 16:29, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. I emailed the author of the Linear algebra book asking permission to upload the book as you recommended. He was dubious about the wikibooks project actually improving his book (since he hadn't recieved any helpful improvements from the web community for the last ten years, when the book was released.) He wants to be assured that there will be a notice on the page,
that is clear to everyone, that the original one-author version is located at http://joshua.smcvt.edu/linearalgebra . Does this contradict any wikibook policy? If it doesn't, how do I actually upload the pdf of the book. Thanks--Shahab (talk) 05:46, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. Can you assist in uploading the book. I have no idea where to start. Both the PDF and the Latex source are available on the above site. (I have also emailed the author requesting a word document copy of the book.) Thanks. --Shahab (talk) 06:23, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Username Change
Hi, I'm Wesley Gray. I've been contributing here for a little while, just fixing up and adding a few things. I'd like to have my name changed to Wesley_Gray, so I can have the same name for all my accounts. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Wes/Wesley Gray (talk) 18:02, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- You can view my Wikipedia page here: Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wesley_Gray, and email is enabled from other users. I am also not changing my name for malicious purposes. I think I've covered all the requirements. Thanks for the help!
- Cheers,

[edit] New Pages on MATLAB Programming: Semilog and Loglog
Spradlig (talk) 00:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC) I had intended for the Semilog and Loglog pages to be for the MATLAB Programming wikibook. I had thought that all I needed was to include the MatlabNav template. I know how to move pages on my own wiki (wikis.ControlTheoryPro.com) but I have admin rights there. How should I go about correcting my error here?
- I work in pointing control for satellites. I've also worked on Guidance, Navigation, & Control for the International Space Station. Yeah I like controls and while I found a lot of good resources on the web for controls I found that most sites lacked either theory, application, and/or details on modeling. Since the wikibook on Control Systems is pretty good and pretty thorough from a theory standpoint the current focus of my site is modeling and application.
[edit] An Early Childhood Subdivision in the Education Bookshelf?
Hi Whiteknight! I hope you're enjoying the Springtime. I am writing to ask you whether or not you think it would be appropriate to add an Early Childhood section to the Education Bookshelf. I am collaborating with two instructors at Old Dominion University who would like to develop a series of Early Childhood Education books via Wikibooks, and I noticed that several texts on this general topic already exist. In short, I think such a division would be a good idea. What do you think? Thanks for your help, and have a great day!

[edit] Thanks! (and one more question about videos)
Thanks Whiteknight! Our faculty at ODU are starting to embrace wiki methodology. They're recognizing the potential for powerful learning, and it's an exciting time to be around here. I know you've been in contact with my mentor, Dwight Allen, and he has really appreciated all your help. So do I.
The books we'd like to categorize as Early Childhood are not yet constructed. They will be developed this summer and fall. When the instructors decide on titles (you know how funny they are about these types of things) I will be sure and let you know. Thanks, by the way, for offering to help with this task. I've heard a lot of good things about your bot!
One of the early childhood faculty is interested in posting videos on one of the new wikibooks. I have been around a lot and have not seen any videos around wikibooks--only some brief animations. Am I right in assuming that uploading video content is not yet supported? If so, can you suggest a work-around? Thanks, as always, for your help, and have a great day!

[edit] Usernames on Module Pages
Hi Whiteknight,
Thanks for all your help with our projects. We sure have learned a lot from your expertise. Now, we are planning for the second iteration of one of our new texts -- Foundations of Education and Instructional Assessment, and we'd like to include an "About the Authors" section where readers could find the links to all of our students' user pages via their usernames. However, a long time ago (way back in 2007) an admin. told me that usernames on module pages were regarded as vandalism in Wikibooks community. Are there ever exceptions to this rule, and do you think the idea above could be exempt from this tradition? If not, do you have other suggestions for achieving the same end? Thanks for your support. Wikibooks wouldn't be the same without you!

[edit] Usurpation request
Thank you very much for the usurpation. Regards, --Kaustubh (talk) 12:56, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Yuyu_temp --> Yuyu
Dear Whiteknight this is my verification as I am the same person on zh.wikip.
Looking forward to your replies :p --Yuyu temp (talk) 17:28, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Transferring Data between Standard Dial-Up Modems
Whiteknight, could you take a look at Transferring Data between Standard Dial-Up Modems? I came across it while searching for similar information on Google, and I'm inclined to think that it is incorrect information (see my comment on the talk page). Thanks, --Iamunknown 23:09, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking a look. Good luck with end-of-the-semester stuff. I should be getting back to that too... :\ --Iamunknown 23:53, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] WikiEducator OER Handbook
Andrew,
A group at COSL and WikiEducator is working on an OER Handbook for educators. As a part of that, we are looking for stories from educators or learners that have used or created open educational resources. Examples of the kind of thing we're looking for, as well as the wiki where these can be added, are available here:
Creating OER - http://www.wikieducator.org/OER_Handbook/educator/User_stories_create
Getting/Finding OER - http://www.wikieducator.org/OER_Handbook/educator/User_stories_finding_OER
Localize/Remix OER - http://www.wikieducator.org/OER_Handbook/educator/User_stories_localize_remix
Using OER - http://www.wikieducator.org/OER_Handbook/educator/User_Stories_use_OER
I am hoping that you can help spread the word about this and/or contribute something yourself.
I think that the OER movement is one of the most exciting things going on right now and hope that this and other projects will help spread the word!
Thanks.

[edit] Queen's Indian Defense
Thanks for taking an interest in the chess. To my knowledge the Queen's Indian Defense does not occur until black has played b6. As shown w:Queen's_Indian_defense, also here and here. Perhaps you have reason to believe otherwise, so will leave you to change or leave as you determine is appropriate. SunCreator (talk) 20:41, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Blog
Thank you for the comment on the blog. I appreciate to see that at least one person understood what I meant. And you are right, without naming names, some important people oppose the idea. Anthere (talk)
[edit] Hello
Can you help me with something please? I actualyl have a couple of questions.
1. I was working on the Dutch Empire, and on the contents page I forgot to put a /#The Begining of an Empire in a few of them. Do you know how I could get is to redirect to another page without having to write the whole thing over again?
2. How long will it be before I can upload maps, images, etc?
Thanks (Red4tribe (talk) 22:26, 5 May 2008 (UTC))
Is there a restriction on that too? I don't see a move tab on the top of my screen. (Red4tribe (talk) 22:44, 5 May 2008 (UTC))
Thanks, I actualyl already have an account there, so this should be useful (Red4tribe (talk) 22:56, 5 May 2008 (UTC))
[edit] Hey WK
Hey WK, how've you been? Almost done for the semester? I'm graduating on Sunday, hopefully you'll see me around more after I kind of regroup and realize I have more time. Regards. Mattb112885 (talk to me) 02:34, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hey, my plan is work for a year (I have a job) and then go to grad school in hopes of becoming a teacher. I know my school tends to get out earlier than most, so I wish you luck in the last couple things you have to wrap up. I hope as well that we can find some sort of renewed energy around here, we'll see though. BTW what ever happened to that hit counter tool? I tried to find it and it was a dead link, did they just get rid of it because it was too buggy? Regards. Mattb112885 (talk to me) 16:25, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Mathematics Shelf Reorganising
Sorry I took so long to read your reply.
I didn't really understand the idea of Subject pages. Do you mean to say that the Mathematics page (for example) will have a complete list of math books in the left column and links to subject pages of subfields (say Subject:Topology or Subject:Algebra) in the upper right column?
SPat (talk) 14:38, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, but I still can't see the advantage of using Subject pages rather than bookshelves. Firstly, I do not like the idea of using such a large portion of the page just for a complete list of books. For any new user, a properly indented list of topics and subtopics (I have windows explorer on my mind) would be more useful than a complete list. Instead of linking to sub-topics, it would be more efficient to list all books under a title (say algebra books under "Algebra"). Also, why can't we use the current cclassification as a basis for making subject pages for subtopics?
SPat (talk) 01:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thanks, That seems a good idea. As for the subcategories, I feel that it would be better to split them into two sections, Introductory (High school?) math and Advanced math, something like:
Introductory Math
- Basic Math
- Introductory Algebra
- Geometry
- Combinatorics(?)
- Pre-Calculus (Trigonometry, some algebra, geometry etc.) and Calculus
Higher Math
- Foundations
- Analysis
- Advanced Algebra
- Topology and Geometry
- Statistics/Probability/Discrete Math(?)
- Number Theory
- Differential Equations
- Applied Math
Miscellaneous
- Test prep/Olympiad prep
- et cetera

[edit] Rename User
I sysop and burocrat in pt.wikiquote.org; In view the login provided by the unified META [1], ask the reaname of User:Chico, currently without any contribution in the project. The rename may be something like User:Chico-Old. Thank advance.
--189.23.10.62 (talk) 20:23, 9 May 2008 (UTC) q:pt:user:Chico (talk)
- Seven months with no edits or work whatsoever seems usurpable to me. That user hasn't contributed anything and so I think it's fair to take it over. I'd certainly want confirmation to make sure the real Portuguese Chico requested this, but the rest looks OK from my point of view. -withinfocus 22:22, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
The request is within the overall project login; To confirm my identity can post a message on http://pt.wikiquote.org/wiki/Usuário_Discussão:Chico

[edit] INDIAN DRAGON
I renamed this user not thinking anything of it, but as I looked at their talk page I saw you wanted confirmation they are such a user on other projects. I wanted to leave you a comment to ask why you would want this? The user is brand new here, but if someone named Blah_Blah here wants to be named Blah Blah then I don't see what other projects have anything to do with it. If the user would like the name, then I feel we should provide the switch if no previous user is being usurped. Blah Blah on Wikipedia will have to deal with that problem at a later date. I don't want to limit our users. Thanks in advance for your comments. -withinfocus 15:17, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Dutch Empire
Hello, thanks for putting the printable version up. Could you tell me how I could make this easier to navigate on? I realize it is diffucult since you need to go to the contents page. Thanks. (Red4tribe (talk) 20:16, 15 May 2008 (UTC))
- I was glancing through, and I found this one. I thought it would be good because of the theme of history and all, take a look at it. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/History_of_Spain/Contents/Ancient_Spain
(Red4tribe (talk) 20:39, 15 May 2008 (UTC))
-
- Here is a flag. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Image:Flag_of_the_Netherlands.svg The prinout version does look very good by the way. I'd use red, white and blue although they might look a little Americansih, they are the Dutch colors too. (Red4tribe (talk) 20:48, 15 May 2008 (UTC))
[edit] Bot help
Could you use your Bot to change all the Category:Chess opening theory so that any occurances of:
For explanation of notation, see [[wikipedia:Chess Opening Theory Table|Chess Opening Theory Table]].
are changed to:
{{ChessTable}}
Also am I right in thinking your bot cannot move pages? I'm thinking it might be a good idea for self containment to move all '/Opening theory in chess/' pages to '/Chess/Opening/'.But I think you said before your bot can't move pages, is that correct?
Thanks SunCreator (talk) 12:41, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

- Okay, leave the move stuff and do the first part. SunCreator (talk) 15:37, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Similar Vandals
I've noticed a couple of vandals who have posted in an oddly similar way. I am not an Admin, and as you know, I can't block. But take a look at these. They all say something along the lines of "nice work" but they deleted much information on the pages.
