With regards to w:Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/SunStar Net, I am a different individual to the person I was being accused of! I hadn't even heard of them until that case!!
Please let the person on Wikipedia know this.... anyhow, I will try and edit Wikibooks a bit more now, apologies for the spambot stuff from 1qx, he should never have run that software (it's gone now!)

[edit] Transwiki Special:Import question
Hiya, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about mediawiki for a work project. I have a running version of mediawiki with extensions and restricted namespaces working. I'm trying to figure out how to make it easy for users to copy a page/article from a restricted namespace to the main namespace. The transwiki stuff is a little confusing to me, but I think some of the functionality could be adapted to what I need. In looking at this page MediaWiki Administrator's Handbook/Importing, I'm trying to find the functionality displayed in the first screenshot (included below). My installation displays the XML import form in Special:Import, but I don't see the "Importing from transwiki import sources" option anywhere or a way to configure it. Is this a custom page that only exists on wikibooks? Please pardon my ignorance, especially if I am way off track even asking you about this. You were listed on the history and looked like an active user. Thanks! - elly
—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 128.84.103.31 (talk • contribs) .
We had it turned on using a bugzilla request, and I'm not too sure about the technical details. I'm told it has something to do with the import tool querying the export tool on the project you're importing from, but quite honestly I'm not completely certain what that means :). --SB_Johnny | talk 22:54, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks SB_Johnny! I'll take a look at the bugzilla and track it from there. Cheers. -elly
- If you have questions about the software that we can't answer here, you could probably get your answers from either of these two sources:
- the first website is a site run by the WMF (parent organization of Wikibooks) that contains many useful help pages and documentation. The second website is the official site of the software design team, and many of the developers there could probably help you to answer your question. Also, if you are on irc at all, there is a chatroom #mediawiki on irc.freenode.net. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 23:03, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

I felt really good that my talk page was the 17th most edited page in the project, until i saw that Panic's was the 4th. I'm also currently listed as the "most active contributor" (since Jguk is on vacation), and you are listed as the 3rd. [edit] Re: RFA
Johnny: While I am honoured that you would consider me for nomination, I would have to turn it down. I'm an editor, that's where my strength lies; I'm here to write, and being admin would take a lot away from my time writing. At the moment at least, I can best serve WB by staying a lowly (!) editor. But thanks very much for the offer. Chazz (talk) 15:39, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Oversight
I'm not that big on "censorship" when possibly offensive content has a right to be there (as in it's being presented professionally even though it might be a sensitive subject) but if you spot vandalism then please do your delete trick, including if it's in the Muggles' Guide. We really should have oversight permissions to take care of this. I forget exactly why we decided to stop pursing that, but getting one user here with the ability is reasonable to me. We shouldn't have to do selective restorations for vandalism. -withinfocus 22:28, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Blogging
I've started two blogs on blogspot:
The first is going to be devoted to the new WMF chapter (assuming we can get it off the ground), and the second one is being devoted to Wikibooks. If you are interested in joining either blog, you are more then welcome. I dont know how often I will get around to either, but I would like to use these a a place to really let out some of my inner-most thoughts without having to worry about the NPOV or soapbox policies. Anyway, I'll talk to you about it later, i'm sure. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 19:55, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
- I'll read those since you linked me them, but I'm rather "provincial" in my www habits... the only blogs I read are the ones on Wikiversity. If it ain't Guaranteed Free Distributable and Long-term, I don't waste my time on it.--SB_Johnny | talk 23:02, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
-
- I would hardly call it a waste of time. Plus, a blog on this site will probably have a larger reading audience then a blog at wikiversity. As to the licensing, i'll make it explicit that all the content on there is GFDL-compatible. I'm also not just asking you to read the blog, but i'm asking that you actually contribute to them (at least the WMF one). --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 23:16, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New Chapter Stuff
Cary put me in touch with Notafish, the new-chapter representative. You can see her message to me here. She sent me two links:
- http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Step-by-step_chapter_creation_guide
To start a chapter, apparently we need to write a set of by-laws, and they also recommend that we apply for non-profit status. I think we can put off the non-profit status thing for now, but I think that creating a set of bylaws is a pretty important part of the process. I could only really find one example of a chapter bylaws, for the hong-kong chapter. It'f pretty long, and it goes into perhaps a little bit more detail then we need, but it might serve as a good model to follow. Read this up, and let me know what you think. I can try to draft some bylaws soonish, just to get something written down. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 23:16, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

I promoted Mattb after just 6 days, which i wouldnt normally do except for all the enthusiastic support. Mike has about 6 or 7 votes, and I would prefer to wait another day or two before promoting him, just so that nobody complains about my doing it prematurely. [edit] Preloading text
To save the trouble of a long technical explanation about this, i simply created a new template that does the work for you: {{FancyLink}}. For instance, if you want to create a link to a page "Whatever" that preloads the new page with the text of the sandbox, you would write:
- {{FancyLink|page=Whatever|preload=Wikibooks:Sandbox|link=My Fancy Link!}}
Which creates:
If you want to make the text of the sandbox appear at the top of the page, you would write:
- {{FancyLink|page=Whatever|editintro=Wikibooks:Sandbox|link=My Fancy Link 2!}}
Which creates:
If you take a look at the URLs that this template generates, you will get a good idea about how it works. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 17:14, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Google Analytics
I've installed the script into your monobook.js file. Everytime you load the page, information about the page (like the URL, etc) is sent to google. Google keeps a record of all this, compiles the information at the end of the day, and sends me a report. As we start getting results, i'll post the results here to wikibooks. If we get a bunch of people involved in this test and everything works out well, we could add the script to the global MediaWiki:common.js file for everybody to use. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 20:33, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
- The google service is currently complete free to use. The catch, of course, is that when i go to check the results i get asked if i want to upgrade to "premium" service. The short answer is that we don't pay a thing unless I choose to upgrade my account, which I wont. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 22:30, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Hey Johnny, I tried to reinstall my "Remote Talk" script onto your profile. I added the necessary code to the bottom of your Monobook file. You should be able to see the text at the bottom of that page. There should be a box at the top of your talk page (this page) that says things like "Commons", "Pedia", "Versity", etc. Clicking these links should open a window with your talk page from those projects.
I've tested this script to work in safari, so everything should be in good working order. Please tell me that you can see these links and that everything works as expected. I'll be in touch. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 01:55, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia undeletion request
hey, I wondered if you could do me a favor and take a look at a wikipedia undeletion request that I posted: w:WP:DRV#WritersUA. I certainly don't want you to take any action on it, but I would like a second opinion as to whether my understandings of notability policy are way off-base or not. I'm not interested in fighting this point into the ground, so if you say i'm wrong here then I'll give it up immediately. I'm just not as familiar with WP policy, so I want an opinion from somebody who is. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 15:06, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- I saw it. I don't know enough about it to really state an opinion though... the notability issues are probably valid, I'm afraid :(. --SB_Johnny | PA! 18:19, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I'm trying to push the idea that the subject matter makes it difficult to prove notability using standard methods, and that the "spirit" of the notability guidelines requires that the page be undeleted. It is a long shot, i know. anyway, thanks for looking at it. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 18:53, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- This is the group your presenting to, right? If so, I completely understand the desire to get them some attention (after all, they're giving us some), but Wikipedia isn't necessarily a good venue for that. If there's anything I can do to help get them some "verifiable press", I'm at your service :). --SB_Johnny | PA! 22:23, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- In talking about this presentation, the guy who's in charge mentioned that the article was deleted, and asked if I could take a look at it for him. I just don't think he understood the notability guidelines, so I agreed to look over the page logs for him. Looking through the deletion logs, I developed a certain amount of doubt that the page deserved to be deleted. But like I said, it's not a big deal really. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 01:56, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Authors
Not rehashing old discussions but you shouldn't add anyone but yourself to an authors list (unless requested to do so by the author). The rational of this was already addressed I think it should be on the Ownership proposal talk or history log. --Panic (talk) 18:24, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- Uh, it was discussed, but nothing was decided (except perhaps by you). This is just a list of the top contributors to the book as a whole by edit count, created using a toolserver tool. I'll be getting in touch with all of those users to see if they want to be listed using something other than their username, but they're already "on the record" as contributors in the electronic version, so there's certainly nothing wrong with crediting them on the contributors list. --SB_Johnny | PA! 18:59, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- It seems I saw [4], were the keyword to my first post (author) was used, the problem I referred above was solved as you changed it to contributors, even the need to contact all seems as not important since the information is also public available on the history logs. As for the decision even if not clearly reached (and I doubt we will ever reach an understanding on that) is that using the author reference we are imparting ownership of rights over the content (that is why I pointed to that relevant discussion), this is a subject matter that even if we relegate it as a moot point, has high importance similar to what we give to the licensing of other things like images, even the distinction can later came in hand if for instance a need arises to change a license of a work. Sorry I jumped on this but I didn't know you were still editing that page...
-
- Heh. Well, as you can probably imagine, I didn't make the tool (or name it). If I was making the tool, it wouldn't work :). --SB_Johnny | PA! 19:21, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- In any case, I don't know how the accounting is performed but don't you risk classifying for instance vandalism, erroneous edits as contributions ? --Panic (talk) 19:25, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
-
- I doubt it... the top 30 at the moment all have more than 40 contribs, and very few vandals get away with that many before they're blocked. --SB_Johnny | PA! 19:39, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
-

- I'll test it on the books I'm working... But using the data can have yet another problem, since it is not dynamic it would require regular updates or at least an indication of the time if was last checked and if not updated regularly would not serve any real purpose. I'll try. Txs. --Panic (talk) 19:49, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

-
- Yeah, but it's really only needed for print versions anyway (i.e., when you create a PDF), so when a new PV is made up, you just update it. That will happen a lot with the garden book in particular, since there will over time probably be hundreds of TOCs for whatever courses it's going to be used for.--SB_Johnny | PA! 20:02, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Looks fantastic to me! It definitely will help us out, possibly attract some contributors, and definitely raise the bar. I like it. You want my bot to help out with the "details" of distribution? --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 21:10, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- 1 minute per user, 30 users, that's half an hour! Seriously, my bot can make more then 1 edit every second, and it's a trivial task for me to set it up. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him use my bot :) --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 23:17, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

- Yeah, but I actually know most of those people to some degree or another as members of various wikiprojects. I'd rather leave the note myself for the top contributors... a different note might be handy for smaller contributors though (mostly just asking them to make sure they have a registered account here, etc.). Looks like Jomegat's been doing a bit of importing too, so plant and animal editors might have even more edits here than the garden manual list lets on. --SB_Johnny | PA! 10:02, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] A new book
Hi Johnny, We're working on a new book here at ODU called Foundations of Education and Instructional Assessment. I plan to link it to the old book(s)Social and Cultural Foundations of American Education and use some of the same topics.
As I've begun the process all over again, I thought of a couple things. First--categorization. In the past, we've simply inserted category tags that categorized all modules from the book together. Can I still do this and keep with Wiki conventions? Second--repetition. I know that the new book is very similar in title, and it may be similar in content, eventually, (though I doubt it), but it is important that the two books be separated, because the name of our course has changed, and so it's important that the new book's title reflect the new name of the course. Again, is this ok with respect to the community's norms?
As usual, I sure do appreciate your time and any insights you can offer me. Thanks!
Pete (talk) 23:07, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Quick Reply
Thanks for your quick feedback! I'm glad to know that this book will be ok. I think a greatest hits edition of the first book is definitely in order. We have student rating data and instructor grade data for all of the articles in each of the editions of the first book, so all we need to do is establish a formula for weighting those two components of the "grade" in order to fairly identify the "best" articles.
As far as the print versions go, my boss and I have thought this desirable for a long time, but I've never gotten organized to give the idea wheels. I will read the article on print versions and establish a timeline for getting this done.
If you would direct me to the bot you mentioned, I'd really appreciate it.
On a different note, another project I'm working on has me designing a site for use by K12 teachers all over VA, and the boss of that project would like to incorporate a wiki component. I wonder if you have any experience in applying the wikimedia software to other sites. If so, can you direct me to some instructional resaources on that topic?
Thanks so much for your time, and have a great day!
Pete (talk) 15:17, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
p.s. - is it possible for me to remove the field at the top of the new book congratulating me on starting the book and asking me to categorize it? Thanks!
-
- Hi Pete. Yes, in your case I'd say remove it... part of the purpose of that template is to attract new contributors, but since this is a class project you probably don't want too much of that until it gets into the copyediting phase.
- As for the bot, it's User:BryanBot, but your best bet would actually to get in touch with User:Herbythyme, who is active on Wikibooks and will be able to help you explain what you want to Bryan.
- Finally, you might also be able to use this tool (not working yet for your new book, presumably because it's not in the database yet) to get a list of contributors, which is a good step to take when moving towards a print version. --SB_Johnny | PA! 01:05, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- RE: {{new book}} - you can remove it if you like, but it advertises your book on {{new}}, which appears in several locations. If the template's been there for more than a week and the book is properly categorized, then it should be removed. Up to you, really. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 17:24, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Formatting a Table
Hi Johnny,
Hope all is well for you in PA. I am working on another wikibook called CTQEL Educators' Assessment Handbook, and as part of the project, I hope to add a big table to one of the book's main pages. I would like this table to have about 10 columns and to stretch across an entire module page. Can you refer me to some instructions for creating such a table? Thanks, as always, for your support!
Pete (talk) 20:13, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Pete. I'm actually just about to leave for vacation. You might want to ask either User:Whiteknight or User:Darklama in any case, as they're better with that sort of thing than I am! --SB_Johnny | PA! 20:35, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Wikibook Subjects
Is there any particular reason you have "Cichorium intybus," "Strawberry," "Echinacea," and "Garlic" listed as wikibooks major subjects? --Rickpock (talk) 22:04, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean by "major", but one of the functions of the subject namespace is to collect modules and sections from diverse books relating to a particular subject. Over time and with a lot more subject entries, the subject namespace might be able to function as our default search namepace, since unlike Wikipedia or other "non-subpaged" namespaces, Wikibooks may have any number of pages relating to a particular thing. --SB_Johnny | PA! 09:26, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Licensing
Here's the Foundation resolution: foundation:Resolution:Licensing policy. It sets out the deadline (o noes!) as well as a relatively clear outline of what must be included in the EDP (= fair use policy). Points of interest:
- All media must be free
- If they're not, then you must have a fair use policy with certain characteristics:
- Media identified in a machine-readable format (that means templates)
- EDPs must be minimal, and then sets out what that means
- Free alternatives must be used where possible
- Anything not in compliance must be deleted
- For projects without an EDP currently (that's both here, and WV too)
- New media that are not free start getting deleted beginning March 23 2007 <- Wikibooks does this already; WV doesn't, so you're past the deadline by nearly a year.
- Put together an EDP if you want one (which presumably WB and WV both do)
- Old media must be brought into compliance by March 23 2008 <- that's the deadline I'm talking about for Wikibooks
- "This policy may not be circumvented, eroded, or ignored on local Wikimedia projects." (emphasis theirs)
So now we have a rule other than common sense that tell us we need to get on this :) – Mike.lifeguard | talk 04:11, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Vandal reverts
Actually, it was the Wiki software; I got a notice which said "Action throttled -- In order to prevent vandalism, there is a limit on the number of times you can perform this action." And apparently I had hit it.
Missed one of his edits, by the way -- I fixed tannersf's talk page just now. I think that's all, I don't see any (top) markers on his change list any more. Chazz (talk) 17:17, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
- Rollback all the way... I guess I'm limited because I'm not admin. Oh, well... I did hit a couple, including Herby's, after I got throttled, with undo. But that was afterwards. Chazz (talk) 17:23, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- That was an OP, so I reblocked for longer. Hope you don't mind. It's been active cross-wiki, as well as long-term. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 17:25, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- I'm not admin because, although it has been offered twice before, I've turned it down both times. I probably could use the tools, but I haven't the time to use them properly; my efforts have been concentrated on one book, with tiny (non-revert) edits on maybe a couple of others, and I don't have the wide exposure to Wiki that I feel I would need to do the office justice. Basically the same reason that when offered RB and NPP, I accepted RB and turned down NPP. I'm a writer / editor, and I know my limits. Chazz (talk) 18:47, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- Perhaps I'm more active... but it's a very localized sort of activity. Nearly everything I've done that hasn't been vandal reverts has been on the Muggles' Guide, with only two side excursions that I can recall. And for nearly everything I do, the tools I have are more than enough. But your vote of confidence in me is heartening. Chazz (talk) 20:19, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

hi johnny, thanks for the welcome around the traps and sharing how it works for you here. it's exciting to move beyond WP-land. [edit] Dandelions
Hi Johnny,
I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.
I went for walk on my usual lunchtime BCP circuit today - first time in several months. It's about one mile long. I saw only one dandelion in bloom in spite of some diligent searching. There's hardly anything green here at all. A little grass here and there.
It's worse at my house though, as my yard still has at least a foot of snow - maybe more. I've been thinking about the BCP for a while, so it was nice to get out and see something!
I didn't count the cultivated flowers in flower boxes for two reasons:
- I don't think they count.
- I didn't know (or really care) what they were.
It's great to be back!

[edit] Usurpation Mania
I'm sending this message to all our current bureaucrats, User:SB Johnny, User:Derbeth, User:Withinfocus (and myself).
If you take a look at WB:AN, you'll notice that we've been swamped with username usurpation requests because of SUL. This isn't even the half of it, my user talk page as well as Mike.lifeguard's are being loaded with them as well. I've been handling the majority of them, I've seen User:Withinfocus handle a couple as well. This volume of requests is likely to stay steady at least, and may rise as more users find naming conflicts.
I'm thinking that we need a more organized way to do this, at least temporarily. en.wikipedia has a nice model to follow, they have a dedicated rename requests page (several, actually), and they use a series of templates to create a lot of links to help the bcrats out. w:WP:USURP is the page, I believe. I would like to create a discussion page (Wikibooks:Reading room/Administrative Assistance/Renames is an option) where all rename and usurpation requests can be directed. The page can contain some basic instructions about how to request a rename, and maybe a few basic rules about it. I know we don't have any "official" rules yet, but maybe it's something that we can think about doing. This is another page on your watchlist, and more procedure, but it would help to ease the work flow a little, I think.
User:Withinfocus and I have already had at least one disagreement about a rename (it was very minor), but maybe it's worth coming up with some guidelines as a group? If we have a few points of consistency, that might help to streamline things a little.
Also, considering that bcrat-related activity is in a spike, and some of our current bcrats are less active here then they used to be, I think I would like to seriously field some new candidates for the position. If anybody has any comments or suggestions about this, I would love to hear them. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 05:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- I created a page for this purpose (probably temporary) at Wikibooks:Reading room/Administrative Assistance/Renaming. I don't think we need to "enforce" it's use, but it should help to de-clutter WB:AN a little bit. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 13:39, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "A Wikimanual of Gardening" moved to "Horticulture"
I see that "A Wikimanual of Gardening" moved to "Horticulture".
I agree that "A Wikimanual of Gardening" is not the best name.
But "Horticulture" reminds me of one of my pet peeves: I see too many people try to "fancy up" their language, but the result ends up unnecessarily difficult to understand. I could talk on and on about this problem.
--DavidCary (talk) 16:25, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
- I'm a horticulturist, and studied in the department of horticulture at college. I'm not sure I understand the beef? --SB_Johnny | PA! 13:12, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
-
- Is the subtle difference between "horticulture" and "gardening" relevant here?
-
- I've never taken even a single class on gardening or horticulture at college.
- Nevertheless, in spite of my total lack of formal education, today I put some more crocus bulbs in the dirt.
-
- My "beef" is with people who "fancy up" their language, using obscure words that few people know, making things sound far more complicated than they really are. They (perhaps unintentionally) delude people into thinking "I'm not smart enough to learn or do that", and then those people quit learning and quit doing.
- You know, people who say "utilize" instead of "use", or "form-factor" instead of "shape", or "escargots" instead of "snails", or "an instance of horticulture" instead of "a garden" :-).
-
- Since far more people understand the word "horticulture" than "wikimanual", I think "Horticulture" is a better name than "A Wikimanual of Gardening".
- But I suspect that a simpler name would be even better. Perhaps "Garden tips" or Gardening ?
- --DavidCary (talk) 23:12, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
[edit] WikiGarden (proposal)
Hello SBJohnny,
I asked the question below and got sent to you, as you're apparently the one to talk to. I've repeated this question below, so you can read it. Question is: can this idea somehow be incorporated into existing projects?
-
- I don't know if there's already something like this idea out there yet, but over the last few weeks I've thinking about a project that describes garden and crop plants: WikiGarden and Wiki Crop. It could be like an interface, where you log in with your own account that has a description of your climate zone, soil type and other variables.
-
- The pages describe garden plants or crop plants with their different varieties and cultivars etc, and every user can check boxes to rate the growth of this plant in their own garden. After a while, this could develop into a somewhat reliable sort of guide to see if a certain plant is fit for the circumstances that you enter into your search box. It could also have two discussion pages: one on the properties of the plant in question, and one on the editing of the page itself.
-
- As I'm not much of a gardener or a computerist (just a contributor with an idea), I was thinking that maybe it could be interesting to start this up as a project of agricultural, horticultural and florists schools all over the world. Perhaps anyone knows teachers on schools who would like to participate with their pupils in setting this up.
- Anyone any ideas? --Satrughna 09:51, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
- You may be interested in Horticulture and v:Bloom Clock. User:SB_Johnny might have some better ideas about your proposal, but at present I would say that subject area can be adequately covered by existing projects. — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 13:46, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Anyway, hope to hear your reaction. With regards, --Satrughna (talk) 16:23, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Satrughna. Yep, I've been working on a couple projects like that, thinking about another one for garden experimenting on WV as well. Not sure what you want to do though... you're not a gardener? --SB_Johnny | PA! 15:09, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well John, I do own a garden and have been working in the past in gardens and in the cultivation of tulips (in Holland), so I do know a bit, but can't match the professionals. As I wrote, I just had an idea and wanted to see if there was anything like that already, or else I would like to contribute in the brainstorming before putting something up or just exchange ideas. Anyway, if you have any use for these ideas, I'm interested in your ideas and projects. Where can I find more information on the background of these aforementioned projects? (what's WV though?)--Satrughna (talk) 18:22, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- Ah ok :-). Well, the Horticulture book is sort of a general technical manual for plants, pests, diseases, and other things. Lately I've been thinking more about Organic Horticulture in the Mid-Atlantic, since I've found it difficult to keep a global scope (techniques, plants, problems, etc. will be quite different in, say, California or India than they are on the mid-Atlantic seaboard).
- The "WV" (Wikiversity) stuff is more in the research and experimental side of things: for example, the Bloom Clock has been going since 2006, as a research project aimed at finding out when plants produce flowers in different parts of the world (we don't have any data from the Netherlands yet actually!). --SB_Johnny | PA! 15:04, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation John. I'll try to check up my own plants next year, to see when they flower, but I noticed they pretty closely match the times in Pennsylvania. I'll try to add my logs. At the moment it's pretty much over by now, trees losing leaves and all that. Greetings,--Satrughna (talk) 10:34, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Referred by Risker
I was referred to you by Risker over on the main project. I need an education in how best to go about creating a wikibook on the rather large topic of "Writing." I've moved the screenwriting wikibook from there to a more appropriate page, and placed some text, but other than that, I'm clueless how to proceed. S. Dean Jameson (talk) 21:57, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- The actualy page I'm working on is Writing. What I was trying to explain is that there used to be a book about screenwriting there, which I moved to the Screenwriting page. What I'm curious about is how to pull together a wikibook on such a large topic as Writing encompasses. I have some ideas, particularly regarding young adult fiction, and teaching writing to young people, but I'm a Wikibooks novice to say the least, and I'm looking for any guidance through how things work here that you might be able to offer. (BTW, do you edit as "SB Johnny" on WP as well?) S. Dean Jameson (talk) 17:24, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Wikibooks:Votes for deletion#Psionic Mind Over Matter
Hi SB Johnny,
I just wanted to check if you'd had another look at this book up for deletion. In your comment you mention that you'd skimmed through it and not found it too "mumbo-jumboish". I had the same reaction when I found it first; which is why I put it up for discussion rather than acting on the speedy tag. On closer inspection, the content seemed beyond help. I doubt that this belongs on Wikiversity either and think we should close it soon. Have you had a chance to take a closer look at it? --Swift (talk) 06:16, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] permissions, cont.
Hi Johnny,
Thanks for your quick reply. Right now, our students are planning to interview only teachers--not k12 students; however, interviewing students is a definite goal, so your advice is much appreciated. In most of the local school districts, parents sign (or don't sign) a generic consent form allowing their students to participate in any efforts like ours that are approved by the district. Obtaining approval from the district will likely be the challenging part for our students. That's why we've put this part of the project on the back burner for the time being.
Right now, my biggest concern is just making sure that when our students upload the videos they generate, the interview participants' permission is clear and obvious. I want to make sure we can keep with Wiki community norms (copyleft, for instance), look out for the rights of the interviewees and those of our students--all without prompting Mike.Lifeguard or anyone else to slap our students on the wrist, delete their contributions, etc. If we can negotiate all this before-hand and successfully avoid big problems, our students' motivation will likely remain high.
Thanks for any advice you can provide, and have a great day!

[edit] Greetings from Bali
Hi. I have an account here, too; you may not have noticed as I've done nothing much here. Have a pic, no ice ;) fyi, I'm an expert C++ developer, just a but out of practice. Cheers, Jack Merridew 04:49, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I've been updating the main portals, starting with
The discussion is mostly at
and the other section at the bottom of that talk page. Compare the link's on-hover behaviour on wikipedia.org vs the others. 'news will involve more discussion as they have two links in each top-ten block and that's got techie-impediments.
I have begun nudging the /temp version of other portals in this direction and 'books and 'versity are up next. I may start tread on the individual pages, but it seem better to discuss the core issues on the 'pedia one. Anysways, thought I'd give you a heads up. Cheers, Jack Merridew 07:51, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Hexpixel Code
This book's VFD has stalled but it's been suggested that it be transwikied to Wikiversity. I see that you're a Custodian over there and thought I'd bring this to your attention, if only to resolve this one way or the other. -- Adrignola talk contribs 03:32, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Practical Argumentation Framework has also been nominated for transwiki. Frankly, given Wikiversity's history of being a former member of Wikibooks, I'm surprised neither project has anyone in the Importers group. -- Adrignola talk contribs 03:34, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
- I think all sysops (on both projects) are importers. Darkcode would be the better person to ask though, since I don't know anything about programming. --SB_Johnny talk 12:13, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Apples
Hi SBJ,
This morning I was reverting some vandalism and found Apples. Clearly, you meant this to go somewhere else? --Jomegat (talk) 12:39, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
There's not much to speak of on the above page that you created. It is linked from Topic:Pomiculture at Wikiversity. This is my friendly query as to whether anything will be done to it or whether it should be removed. -- Adrignola talk contribs 19:54, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- It wasn't intended as a cookbook, but rather about apple cultivars (graft union and pollination compatibility, etc.). --SB_Johnny talk 10:51, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
