[edit] Tree of the Truth
Hello Rudolf0100. I've just been looking through what you have got in your book so far, and I am not sure whether it is appropriate content for wikibooks. Wikibooks is a place for textbooks, see Wikibooks:What_is_Wikibooks for more details. Your book appears to be a fictional fairy tale / original work and, as such, not appropriate content. If you feel that you book does belong here then perhaps you need a explanation of why on the discussion page to explain what the book is about. Thanks --AdRiley (talk) 20:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello!
Where to put the text when it is not suitable for wikibooks?
Wikisource?
Why in HUMANITIES/RELIGION there is a book called UTOPIA?
Compared to this, I thought Wikibooks is the right place!?
Thanks for your feedback!
Rudolf
- Utopia appears to be a book about Utopianism (a topic which I am familiar with) and the book appears to be the start of a text book about the subject. Tree of Truth is not a subject I have come across and I didn't feel that the introduction made it clear that it was a textbook about an existing subject, but instead felt more like it was original work. Wikiversity might be a more appropriate place if this is original work. If you could give a brief expanation of what the book is, it might help to work out if it belongs here. --AdRiley (talk) 21:48, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello! I am definitely not the right person to discuss the strategy of the content of wiki books. My feeling was that UTOPIA is also a new text. If you advice to move the "Tree of the Truth" to Wiki source - it's fine with me. Pls. advice me finally.
I just check some chapters in Wikisource... Adding value to source texts Although Wikisource is not a place for editors to contribute new and original works, there are several ways to make original contributions by adding value to existing publications. Entirely new compositions written by contributors are not appropriate here, though they may have a place at other Wikimedia projects such as Wikibooks.
My target is to collect a many as possible translations of the base story and to motivate other wikians to contribute continuing stories. The main goal shall be clear: by gaining respect of each others religious behaviour there should be no reason for fundamentelism. This is a new text, not published so far.
Thanks. Rudolf 07th January 2008
[edit] Re:Tree of the Truth
Hello Rudolf0100, how are you? I got your message, and I think that I can answer some questions for you.
- To properly categorize a book by subject, you can use the {{subject}} template. I'll do this for your book, and you can view the code to see how i did it for future reference.
- Generally, setting up a book as one large page is not a good idea. Splitting a book up into many pages makes it easer to download, navigate, and edit. However, you can use a "print version" to display the whole book as a single page as well.
- I can find Tree of the Truth by search. When you search, it's sensitive to spelling and capitalization. Make sure you type it in exactly the way it is supposed to be, and it should show up.
- Again, make sure you type in the name correctly before pressing "Go".
I hope these answer your questions. I suggest, if you still feel lost, that you check out the book Using Wikibooks. That book is designed to answer a lot of common questions from new users. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 23:28, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello Whiteknight, thanks for your help!
- Subject - thanks that you added the subject. But how can I find the book in the HUMANITIES/Religion section when I don't know that there is this book. e.g. I found the book UTOPIA as I saw it there. How can I make the "Tree of the Truth" visible?
- I'll try to find out the format/code how to breack down in many pages. If you may send me a referenc to a book in which it is made ideally, pls. do not hesitate and send to me.
- thanks it works, I failed in capitalizing ...Truth/truth.
- finally, I have to find out, if this new book is at the right wiki - as I got some feedback from user AdRiley, that it might be not...
Thanks, Rudolf
- Your book is currently visible at Subject:Religion and at Subject:Humanities. Since it's the newest book, it's at the top of the list. As to breaking a book down into pages, you can see an example of a book that I've created recently at x86 Disassembly. Another example that I helped another person do is WHSGUCDA. You can also look for ideas amongst the featured books. I'll look over your book to ensure that it is in the proper place. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 17:33, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your hints. I'll care for the reformating using referenced pages when it is clear, that the "Tree of the Truth" will stay in Wikibooks. Do you have an idea, how to achieve the right adjustment of the FARSI text?
Rudolf
- I tried a solution with some CSS formatting. Let me know if this is correct. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 20:01, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello, This looks very okay now, I am requesting a final check from the translator as well. But looks definitely nicer now. --Rudolf (talk) 16:11, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Move to Wikijunior namespace
Hello Rudolf. After talking with Whiteknight, I have moved your book into the Wikijunior namespace here. Wikijunior is part of wikibooks for books aimed at children and I think your book sits more suitable there. I hope that is ok with you? Please don't take my comments as a critisism of your book in any way. Quite the opposite in fact, I think it looks a very interesting project and as such I wanted to make sure that it was in the right place from the start. I will be watching it develop with interest. Out of curiosity how are you doing all of the transaltions? Do you speak all of those languages yourself? --AdRiley (talk) 07:56, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello AdRiley!
First of all - no problem to find my book in Wikijunior. You have the overview better then me and you know the concept better then me.
To your question if I speek all these languages: no unfortunately not. But I have a nice international network which is helping me. I got commitments for more than 20 translations but I stopped waiting after I got 10+. I hope the others will come too.
But never the less, there are my additional questions:
- If I check via BROWSE/Books by title/T - "I do not get Tree of the Truth" listed - What I have to add that it is listed there as well?
- Is it also somehow possible to get the book linked via HUMANITIES/RELIGION/'other books' or 'see also'?
- What chance has a junior to find the book by accident?
- Might it be reasonable to set up in Wikijuniour a bookshelf for bedtime stories?
Thanks for your feedback!
Rudolf
- Hello Rudolf. I like what you have done with the layout. Answers to your questions below:
- You have to add the tag {{alphabetical|T}} to the front page. I have done this for your book so it should appear under by title/T.
- Yes. Be Bold! Just edit the page where you think the link should appear and add it yourself.
- Hmmm, a bit of a tricky one that. To be honest I am not sure, I guess they would have to be browsing the wikijunior pages and see it there. I think there migh be some statistics on number of page hits somewhere which might be of interest to you.
- I think this would need some more discussion with the community. I will see what Whiteknight thinks as he has more experience around here than me.
Let me know if I can help you with anything else. --AdRiley (talk) 21:42, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello Ad! thanks for your help, probably, I am too shy as I did not think that it's allowed to change the registries as well - no I did! (point 2 above!)! Now the book is complete for the first run. I informed about my community and supporters. Yes, definitely the statistics on hits would be of interest. How to get those?
I am very exited, how it goes on.
Greetings, --Rudolf (talk) 07:24, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] PDF version
There's no need to have a wiki page to hold a PDF version. There is a template you can put on the front page/TOC of the book that links to the file; that's all that's needed. If you have questions, feel free to ask me. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 20:24, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Mike! May I kindly ask you to lead me to an example book or copy below what I have to do!?
Currently I have copied some text from an other book on the front page - but this is not enough I assume... Pls. advise! Thanks a lot!
--Rudolf (talk) 22:47, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- When you make a PDF version, you can upload it (with appropriate license and source info!), then add the template {{PDF version}} to the table of contents and/or cover of the book. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 23:34, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Mike!
I feel somehow lost! I tried to figure out how to set up a printable version and a PDF, but I failed so far in some details. I checked the hints in Wikibooks:Print versions and I set up the print version by copying some comparable printing version pages. May I kindly ask you to check the page Tree of the Truth/Print version and see what is missing. Why is the text of my pages not populated? As well I uploaded a PDF file named Tree of the truth.pdf, but how it is to be linked to
?
Thanks for help. --Rudolf (talk) 16:42, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- I fixed the transclusions at Wikijunior:Tree of the Truth/Print version; everything looks in order now. The template allows you to specify the filename to link to. You'll want it {{PDF version|Tree of the Truth}}. Hope that's helpful. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 21:42, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Mike! Thanks for your help. With your hints, I fixed as well the remaining structuring issues and now the print version is okay from the content point of view. There is one formating issue left: How to print a CRLF - pagebreack? Where is it possible to find a summary of formating options/parameters?
As well I succeeded in linking the PDF file. BUT, there is still an error message telling a time-out problem when loading the PDF. Greetings! --Rudolf (talk) 14:01, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
