Editor

Hello, and sorry for bothering you. I don't even know if this is the correct place to ask this question. If it's not feel free to tell me and I will remove or repost it in the correct place. I am not asking for permission to become an editor but I would like to know how I can tell if I have become one. Is there a notable difference in the pages or the bar that tells the level of accuracy, completeness, etc? Or is it something that you have to be looking for? I have been wanting to update the Wikijunior:All Books page because more books have been added and the format has been redone. Thank you for your help. --Xxagile (talk) 23:22, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Re:YAY

Back for now. I've just been very busy with school and a lot of other stuff....basically my life. I won't be too active until summer but I'm going to make an effort to get on here a few times a week.-Red4tribe (talk) 19:24, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

No license

Hi Mike,

I tagged all images that hasn't got a license tag, so next week all images without a license should be fixed or deleted.

I placed the Special:NewFiles page on my bookmarks, If I check weekly we don't get a backlog like that again.

Best regards, Abigor (talk) 13:57, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your help!  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 18:19, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Mandarin Language/wikibooks

I'm new to this whole thing, sorry if this message should not be here. Sorry if this message is horrendously out of date or something.

I wrote a response to your comment on th page mentioned in the title. There are a couple of other errors/inaccuracies on that page and I would like to correct them but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Sorry, I'm not sure I recall what you're referring to.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 04:05, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

deleting page

I'm assuming your response was a bot, but either way, sorry about that. Its been some years since I've used wikipedia and I had forgotten that you prefer moving/renaming to deleting. Please let me know how to fix the page I deleted (or if it should just be left as is..) I wanted to move Human_Anatomy/Osteology/Extremities to Human_Anatomy/Osteology/Upperextremities. Thanks and sorry! DavidMendoza (talk) 04:58, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm not a bot :) You can use the move tab at the top of the page - this preserves the editing history, which is required by the GFDL.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 05:00, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Individual preferences?

Please see meta:Talk:Wikibooks/Logo#Individual_preferences?; there is something unclear with your decision, I think. --- Best regards, Melancholie (talk) 19:55, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Tex For chemistry.

Hello. I checked http://wikisophia.org/wiki/Wikitex from mediawiki.org.

However, I was unable to use them on wikibooks. Is it that the wikiTex software has not yet been implemented on wikibooks? If so, are there any chances of implementation in the near future?

Thanks.

--Thewinster (talk) 07:41, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

No, we use a more limited version of TeX markup (see Help:TeX markup) - I think the version(s) with more features have security issues, which is why we don't use them.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 15:54, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. That is basically, we use only maths formulae. So, what do we do for chemistry? Use the above mentinoned wiki to generate a .png and then upload the file to commons? Will that have any licensing issues? --Thewinster (talk) 17:49, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
You can approximate some chem stuff with this markup. What you can't, feel free to do just that - there'd be no licensing issues.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 20:03, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Some chemistry stuff... But the tex page you redirected me to has only maths! Is there any documentation for all the things that can be done in chemistry? --Thewinster (talk) 21:01, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Well, you can do stuff like ^{13}_{14}C\ell^{2-} Na + C\ell \rightharpoonup NaC\ell etc... there's a lot you can do with TeX even if you don't have the full featureset.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 21:39, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Bureaucrat "keeps"

I've answered here. Thank you. --M7 (talk) 20:46, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the notice. I've chosen not to comment, since my views are already known.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 21:35, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

re: Twinkle Speedy

Of couse I will, I'll let you know how I get on. It's still at the same place right?

P.S. Sorry for the late reply, once again exam season has sprung upon me, and I havent been able to get to my mail as quickly as usual. Reece (Talk) (Contributions) 09:50, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Help needed with book making

Hello Mike,

I'm hoping you can spare us some attention with an issue we are having in trying to generate a PDF and book from a wikibook we created. I have left details on a technical forum, but am unsure if I am in the right place. You must be very busy, but we would really appreciate it if you, or someone as experienced as you could lend us a hand with this? We are trying to prepare for classes here at Otago Polytechnic but have hit a bit of a problem with the print to PDF feature.

Many thanks. --leighblackall (talk) 22:05, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, it turns out they started a discussion already, so there will be a translation soon. Thanks! PatríciaR (talk) 09:31, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Perfect, thanks!  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 15:56, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Sangi

Hi Mike. Just a question. I'm the creator of the conlang.wikia site for Sangi as well as the wikibook entry

Just wondering, how would I state that I gave myself permission to transfer the material?

Wikim3 (talk) 17:40, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Well, it looks to me like there are multiple people who wrote that - are you sure it was you and only you?  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 05:36, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
It was only me yes. I was working from different locations about 80 miles apart at different times of the year, mostly my parents house over xmas and the summer holidays so I'm definitely sure it was me. Also, I keep a word document version so I know which changes are mine, which is all of them if I remember rightly.

Wikim3 (talk) 12:30, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

OK. If it's still up, you can remove the {{copyvio}} notice. Thanks for the info.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 15:09, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Project name and slogan in Serbian

Hi, you asked me to translate name and slogan for WikiBooks to Serbian, from m:File:Wikibooks-logo-en.svg. The project name is "Вики књиге", as you can see at WikiBooks in Serbian here. The slogan, however, reads "Размишљај слободно, учи слободно" (literally translated as "Think freely, learn freely"). It's very "open" translation, I am not sure I like it, but another translation could be "Слободне књиге за слободан свет" (Free books for a free world). I don't know who, when and why translated it as "Think freely, learn freely", but "Free books for a free world" (Слободне књиге за слободан свет) sounds much better and is practically a direct translation from the original slogan, which, as I said, sounds much better. --Дарко Максимовић (talk) 15:16, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't speak Serbian so I have simply asked m:User:Dungodung for a translation. If the srwikibooks community wants a different translation of "open books for an open world" then I can certainly update the slogan for you.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 18:03, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

www-2.net Spam block

Re: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:COIBot/XWiki/www-2.net

Hi, I have donated a bunch of pictures to wikipedia (de, en, commons) and all my source-links to www-2.net have been removed!

I was very careful to choose VERY appropriate pictures and some of them are real gems, my best photos and are very rare (For example the 1973 poster for Pinkpop and the concert poster for the Krautrock band Wallenstein.

It was a lot of work, and I would hate to manually restore the source-links, can you please, please remove the spam-filter and restore all my edits?

Presumably you will insist that your decision was correct and not rash. I just hope you have a heart and you intend to encourage the donation of pictures -- and not discourage me. Y23 (talk) 08:05, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Please, this belongs at m:Talk:Spam blacklist. AFAIK, the images are still there, it is only the spam links which I removed.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 15:08, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Royal House of Portugal

Dear Mike: Presently, in Portugal, there are two families descending from Kings. One is the "Braganza's" Family (please check: House of Braganza - www.casarealportuguesa.org, from the old House of Braganza, and other is the "Braganza-Wettin's" Family (please check: House of Braganza-Wettin - www.casarealdeportugal.org), from the last Reignant House in Portugal, the House of Braganza-Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. It is natural that their websites are included in their respective articles on Wikipedia, and I think that you should accept both. Remember also that Wikipedia sould be neutral in this type of discussions. Please replace the information and used it to show the difference between this pretenders. Thank you. 84.90.92.195 (talk) 22:24, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Please, there is m:User:COIBot/XWiki/casarealportuguesa.org for this. I don't particularly care about Portuguese royalty or whatever - I'm concerned with the spamming. I suggest you take this to the appropriate forum.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 02:01, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry but a Royal House Official Website should not be considered as spam! In this subject, spam is www.chivalricorders.org/royalty/fantasy/portugal-false.htm. Please, watch how this adress is used to promote false doctrines about the Royal Family of Portugal. You should consider "www.chivalricorders.org/royalty/fantasy/portugal-false.htm" as spam, and not casarealdeportugal.org - House of Braganza-Wettin | Official Website. Please, analise it better. Thank you. 84.90.92.195 (talk) 21:14, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry, you are pushing this link inappropriately. We generally don't blacklist sites because of they say — it's the behaviour of those who are placing links which is the issue. You should probably stop pushing the domain. Instead, suggest inclusion on the talk page for articles where you think inclusion would be appropriate.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 22:28, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

For the unblock. 68.213.169.171 (talk) 02:17, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Again, I suggest you create an account and use it. Feel free to use my Commons talk page if you need help with anything further.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 03:01, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
I thought this was the encyclopedia that anyone could edit, not just registered users. It seems to me that IPs and new users are viewed with some contempt/animosity. In any case, would you be willing to discuss the dilemma with regards to the portraits I submitted earlier? If not, I won't waste your time. If you would be willing to help me understand where I'm missing something, I'd appreciate it. If not, perhaps you could direct me to where I can ask those questions without getting banned.
Lastly, it seems to me for things to be in pretty bad form to semi-protect your own page and/or block someone with whom you disagree. Perhaps things are significantly different on the WikiCommons, but on the English Wikipedia, involved editors don't make blocks, they submit for other uninvolved admins to deal with. There is oversight and a forum for discussion. Here there didn't seem to be any discussion, just a kneejerk accusation and block based solely on an admin's desire/preference, not policy or guidance. Perhaps I just don't understand too. In any case, If you could explain that one to me I'd appreciate it. If not, could you direct me to where I can find such information? IP68.213.169.171 (talk) 01:02, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Commons isn't Wikipedia - it's not an encyclopedia for one thing. As well, most projects don't have the dogmatic view about "uninvolved" administrators (which is misguided, IMO). I do agree with you about protecting one's talk page, but not because she's "involved". Similarly, Cirt's block was in error (though an understandable one), but that has nothing to do with whether he's "involved" or not. Nevertheless, if you have concerns about administrative actions, there are forums for review. commons:COM:AN/U is one, as you know.
Unfortunately, I don't have any specific knowledge about the issues surrounding those portraits. I'd suggest that Durova probably does - you should listen to her even if you don't like what you hear. She'd be among the first people I'd consult on that issue.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 02:00, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Ok, fair enough, but that's what I tried to ask and, to date, no one's given me an answer that covers my questions. IP68.213.169.171 (talk) 02:57, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Request usurpation of Arch dude

Here is a conversation from mediawiki:

I established an account on en.wikibooks more than two years ago. I have would like to unify it, but I have forgotten the password, and the associated e-mail account is now dead. I do not know how to determine if en.wikibooks has any bureaucrats. -Arch dude 19:43, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

You find a list of bureaucrats here. --Thogo (talk) 19:46, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Link to the request-page: see the interwikilink here on the left screen, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:47, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the link to the bureaucrate list. Note that the interwiki link goes to a redlink at wikibooks, which is why I posted here. I will ask one of the bureacrats for help.

So here I am. Can you Help? What is the procedure? Thanks.

here ya go, but we'll need a bit more of the backstory. --SB_Johnny talk 23:32, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
