[edit] Welcome
Hello and welcome to Wikibooks!
Here are some tips to help you get started:
- You should sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~.
- Remember to conduct any editing experiments in the sandbox.
- If you're a Wikipedian, see Wikibooks:Wikibooks for Wikipedians for a primer on how things work here (it's a little different).
- If you want to base your work here on materials from Wikipedia, please use WB:RFI to bring the material over in compliance with the GFDL.
- If you're an instructor and plan on using wikibooks for a class project, see Wikibooks:Guidelines for class projects
- Please say hello at the Staff Lounge with any questions or ideas.
- Eventually, you might want to read the Manual of Style and Policies and Guidelines.
- Please take a look at Wikibooks:Naming policy before starting a new book.
- Remember to maintain a Neutral point of view.
- Explore, be bold in editing pages, and have fun!
You will find more resources in Community Portal. If you want to ask a question, visit the Study help desk, the Staff lounge, IRC channel or ask me personally on my talk page. For site news, see the Bulletin board. It might be an idea if you add this page to your "watchlist" so that you can see when any new information is posted there.
Good luck! --Herby talk thyme 13:04, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Naming policy
Do take a look at the links above but I have moved Introduction to Game Theory:Short history to Introduction to Game Theory/Short history to comply with policy. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:04, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Again - I have moved Overview to Introduction to Game Theory/Overview where it should be. Given the possibilities for confusion I will delete the Overview page which has a redirect at present. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:55, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Herby. What is the easiest way to rename other pages which have a similar naming problem? --Ad 14:32, 27 December 2006 (GMT)
- The "move" tab works just fine as a way to rename stuff - regards --Herby talk thyme 14:51, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Thank you! Got all of the pages right in that book now :-) --AdRiley 16:06, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- Happy to help --Herby talk thyme 16:07, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikibooks Newsletter, Volume 1
This is a short newsletter that is being distributed to all active wikibookians. You are getting this message because you are recognized as an established contributor to the project. This newsletter will be distributed on a regular basis to help share news, information, and tips. It comes from a bot account, User:The Staff. User:The Staff is currently operated by a team of wikibooks admins, the complete list of which is available on the user page of the bot. If you would like to not receive this newletter anymore, please remove your name from the list at Wikibooks:Active wikibookians.
The work you do at Wikibooks is greatly appreciated. However there are plenty of other opportunities for you to get involved and help us to create a thriving Wikibooks community. We are sure that there are things we can do to help you and your understanding of Wikibooks and similarly there are certainly things you could do to help Wikibooks become a better place.
We would like to ask all wikibookians to add the Bulletin Board to your watchlists. The Bulletin Board is a fast and easy way for wikibookians to communicate important news and events to the entire community. If you have important news to share with the community, you can feel free to add your own entry to that page.
If you have general questions or comments about Wikibooks, you are welcome to post a message on The Staff Lounge, a free discussion area. Your input would also be welcomed in the Votes for Deletion and Requests for Adminship discussion pages. These pages are all active discussion areas that help to shape the Wikibooks community as a whole.
Sometimes it is easy to forget that the Wikibooks community is much larger and more diverse then the people who work in a single book, or on a single bookshelf. Hopefully, together we can all make Wikibooks a better place, and a more valuable educational resource.

[edit] Vandal
Thanks for that - short block. If you wish to it is advisable to "warn" folks who are vandalising - Wikibooks:Template_messages/User_talk_namespace will give you some info. Equally feel free to "revert" any you see. Let me know if I can help - thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:37, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Herby. Yes I would have had a go at warning and reverting, but didn't have time. --AdRiley 12:40, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- No problem - thanks for the heads up anyway --Herby talk thyme 13:02, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Monopoly book
I like your outline so far, and I even left a few comments about the copyright issues that you asked about. I'll see if there are any changes that I could make about it later. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 00:31, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

It is appreciated - if we all got stuck in the work would disappear! Good karma for you! --Herby talk thyme 09:13, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- Small amounts of work have rather more valued than large amounts of talking IMO! Thanks again, the help is worthwhile --Herby talk thyme 12:39, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dichotomous Key
Thought it was time I did some work! Odd page, hard to know what to say about books that were actively contributed to and are then left. Almost looks more Wikispecies than here but all in all it looks useful if not up to current (I hope) wikibooks standards. Let me know if I can help & thanks for the continuing work - it is appreciated --Herby talk thyme 11:10, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I figured it sucks but I might as well suck it up and do some of it, the chess is by far the biggest mess so it's almost done, yay! Regards, Mattb112885 (talk) 16:03, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Jello
We actually do have a book here called Jello, it's one of several books created by that user which appear to be virtually identical. I also don't think that any of those books have been edited since the first day they were created, so it's a little suspicious. I wonder if the title is appropriate, but I dont know enough about the subject to be sure. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 12:19, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Vandal
In practice not an awful lot. If you are on IRC you can call for a steward. Your only other option is to put in an RfA!!! That way you get to deal with it. As far as I am concerned I would definitely support you - you are an established, trusted member of the community to me. It is stuff like that that drove me to my request coming up a year ago! Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 12:33, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help in cleaning up. I've removed the vandalism & reversion edits from the history of this page (although admins can see them). – Mike.lifeguard | talk 14:53, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tree of the Truth
Hello Rudolf0100. I've just been looking through what you have got in your book so far, and I am not sure whether it is appropriate content for wikibooks. Wikibooks is a place for textbooks, see Wikibooks:What_is_Wikibooks for more details. Your book appears to be a fictional fairy tale / original work and, as such, not appropriate content. If you feel that you book does belong here then perhaps you need a explanation of why on the discussion page to explain what the book is about. Thanks --AdRiley (talk) 20:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello!
Where to put the text when it is not suitable for wikibooks?
Wikisource?
Why in HUMANITIES/RELIGION there is a book called UTOPIA?
Compared to this, I thought Wikibooks is the right place!?
Thanks for your feedback!
Rudolf
- Utopia appears to be a book about Utopianism (a topic which I am familiar with) and the book appears to be the start of a text book about the subject. Tree of Truth is not a subject I have come across and I didn't feel that the introduction made it clear that it was a textbook about an existing subject, but instead felt more like it was original work. Wikiversity might be a more appropriate place if this is original work. If you could give a brief expanation of what the book is, it might help to work out if it belongs here. --AdRiley (talk) 21:48, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello! I am definitely not the right person to discuss the strategy of the content of wiki books. My feeling was that UTOPIA is also a new text. If you advice to move the "Tree of the Truth" to Wiki source - it's fine with me. Pls. advice me finally.
I just check some chapters in Wikisource... Adding value to source texts Although Wikisource is not a place for editors to contribute new and original works, there are several ways to make original contributions by adding value to existing publications. Entirely new compositions written by contributors are not appropriate here, though they may have a place at other Wikimedia projects such as Wikibooks.
My target is to collect a many as possible translations of the base story and to motivate other wikians to contribute continuing stories. The main goal shall be clear: by gaining respect of each others religious behaviour there should be no reason for fundamentelism. This is a new text, not published so far.
Thanks. Rudolf 07th January 2008
- Hey AdRiley, thanks for the message. This book looks to me like an allegorical attempt to explain religion, not necessarily religious-based fiction. I know the line between the two is narrow. Think of it like Aesop's fables, teaching important lessons using cutesy animal characters. Assuming the book is an allegorical way to discuss an academic topic (which might be the perfect way the approach the topic for some audiences, like young children), I'm inclined to be lenient on it for now. I personally would like to give it a chance to flesh out a little, so we can better see what the book is all about. I like to see new creative presentation methods, but I also realize that some of these are flirting with the boundaries of our inclusion criteria. If you do disagree with me on this, I definitely think we could start a discussion about it in the reading room or even on VFD. I'll leave it up to you. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 15:59, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
-
- As an addendum, maybe we could try moving the book to the "Wikijunior:" namespace, and trying to drum up some illustrations for it? These kinds of "bedtime story" books are acceptable in Wikijunior, and it might make an excellent illustrated text for children to learn about religions. Just a thought. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 16:02, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- If you are looking for information about Wikijunior, User:Xixtas is probably the best person to talk to. He's been the most active over there for as long as I can remember. As far as setting up a bookshelf or whatever, I dont think that's strictly necessary. There are few enough wikijunior books that I think you can just put another book in there and list it like the other books are listed. The new title policy is out of date, and has basically been rejected. If you can't get ahold of Xixtas, I suggest you use your own judgement and do whatever you think is best. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 22:35, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikibooks:Reading_room/General#Rollback_and_Patroller_Rights
You may be interested in this discussion. Please comment if you like. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 21:40, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes I have been following it. I have been meaning to comment but I can't quite decide on my viewpoint... I guess I would fall into the category of people who might potentially request these tools. Rollback would certainly be useful and a would be happy to pitch in with patrolling the new pages. However I have plenty to do around here without those tools and it still wouldn't allow me to block users who are vanalising in real time. I have twice seen real time vanadlism and felt the frustration of not being able to stop it. I wonder if I wanted to then perhaps I might get admin rights if I requested them (Herby said once that (s)he would support me) and I guess if I was going to request anything I would go for that. I think perhaps I am falling on the side on those who think it is an over complication to things here, I understand your thinking but I think maybe the problem will be in who will have these rights? --AdRiley (talk) 22:28, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Well, these are all comments to make over there. I have some ideas about who should get them, but I think avoiding bureaucracy is very important here (just look at the mess enwiki made of this). The rights are really not a big deal, so I don't think we need to worry too much about having strict rules about who gets them etc. As for you requesting adminship, I have been wondering for a while whether you should get the bit. I imagine I'd support you (depending on a few factors, activity levels being one), but that's doesn't necessarily have any bearing on this discussion. The ability to hand out these rights would be of net benefit to the project, even if not in your particular case. If this goes through (and depending on the process we end up with for granting these rights), I'd give you both. This is not a bribe for you to side with me, but just an illustration that there are people that could help the project if given these tools. – Mike.lifeguard | talk 22:36, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes my activity levels are a major factor in me not putting in an RFA, unfortunately real life can pull me away from time to time... I know being active is an important part of being an admin.
- I will put my thoughts together and add my 2 cents to the discussion. --AdRiley (talk) 22:53, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] First sentences
In Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter, I will be manually editing "Severus Snape is the Potions teacher...," to "Severus Snape is the Potions teacher...", etc. on most pages (i.e. The first use of an article's title in that article will become plain bold instead of bold-italic). Hi AdRiley, I'm glad you appreciated the irony of me not signing a post recommending that a post be signed. :-D I wish I could say I did that on purpose, but alas! I am not that clever! [edit] Designs
No I did not read the specifications of wikibooks real close. However, I think my designs could be quite helpful, especially as other people will modify the articles anyhow. Will the articles be deleted ? If not, I would want to add the rest of them (3 more) Hope its OK. I am cooperating with the creater of the Adventist Scouting Book; Jomegat (see my talk-page). I guess that we can alter the articles so that it may all work together and is no longer just "my model" but useful designs/howto info.

Thanks; KVDP (talk) 08:08, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
[edit] User:Aram Pitts
I completely don't understand what you've done with this account. This is a vandalism-only account, with two independent series of vandalisms. It's more than naive to think that this user will ever use his "second chance". The only way of dealing with such cases in an instant infinitive block.
If you have checked this user's contributions (you should have done it if you block him), you'd see that as a result of previous too short block this vandal has come back and continued vandalisms. I believe that after your two-week block this vandal will come back and start moving another pages (he would be able to move semi-protected pages, because he has done enough "edits" to be no longer considered as a new user).
We have enough vandals not to shoot ourselves in the foot with such invalid blocks. --Derbeth talk 11:56, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- Just so you know, this is a pattern vandal who has been attacking many wikis of late. When you see pattern vandalism, reach for the indefblock. I also note that neither of you got his vandal image -- the way to fix those is delete everything, then restore everything but the bad versions. Alternatively, you can revert to a good version and delete the vandal version. Either way, it's not very user-friendly -- hopefully that (along with rollback for pagemove) will get fixed soon.
- That said, we're a team for a reason. Nobody's perfect, so it's a learning experience. — Mike.lifeguard | talk 15:10, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
