In September, 1941, Enrico Fermi designed what became known as the Chicago Pile, the first controlled nuclear reaction. This proved that nuclear energy was real, and usable, and gave impetuous to those who would use nuclear power for more destructive purposes. Built out of a lattice of Uranium, it used Graphite as a controlling substance, to slow down the rate of fission. December 2, 1942 marked the first successful test of Fermi’s Chicago Pile.
