About Me

My name is Kelly Mathews. I grew up in a really small town in Rhode Island. When I was 18 I moved to VA and got married. Then I found out that didn't work to much for me so I later got divorced. I am now a happy single mom of a beautiful girl named Kendra. As you can imagine I am also really busy. I attend school full-time and I am working towards my BA in Science and Secondary Education. In my spare time I love taking my daughter to ballet, gymnastics, and anything other activites she has going on. But after she goes to bed there is nothing like a good glass of wine and a relaxing book to read. Other activities I enjoy are rock climbing, fishing, going to the gym, four wheeling in my Jeep, and of course singing as loud as possible in my car.

Education

Well there is not much to talk about right now. As I mentioned before I grew up in Rhode Island. I graduated from Westerly High School in June of 1997. I only remember because it was Friday the 13th and it was raining. After a few years off trying to find myself I then started to attend Tidewater Community College for a semester in 01 then left. I then decided to go back in 05-06 time frame and decided to attempt to graduate. I finally graduated with my Associates Degree in Science in May 08. I am now attending ODU in hopes of getting my BA in Science and Secondary Education.

Teaching Philosophy

First and foremost I think and believe learning should be fun and exciting. No matter what the subject I think it is important to make it exciting for the teacher to not only present it but for the students to learn it. Children tend to retain more when they are having fun doing it. Second I think parent involvement should be encouraged in all grade levels. Parent involvement will help keep students engaged in class.

People say every child is different and I think as educators and parents we need to realize that every child learns in different ways. We need to be flexible in our ways of teaching to help every student learn and retain as much as possible. I also feel that smaller class sizes can improve a childs capisity of learning. This will help a teacher give more individualized attention to student.

I am sure over time this will become longer but for now this is what I can think of. Teaching to me is fun and exciting. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with students.
