[edit] New Books
How about adding the "New Books" section horizontally below the printable books section? It takes up too much front page space as it is now. --Hagindaz 10:39, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
- Good idea -Template:Main Page content should be changed to the new design anyway. --Krischik T 12:12, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
I've added an example of the Book of the Month and the WikiJunior Book being part of the navigation to my user page. --Hagindaz 21:04, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
- I moved your example to Template talk:Main Page content - because that's where the changes will happen (I a confident that we will go that way ). --Krischik T 07:09, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Proposal to Link to Actual Books Rather than Bookshelves
My vote is to make the links in this section go directly to actual books, not to bookshelves. When each bookshelf actually has multiple, usable books, then it would make sense to link to the bookshelves. Anyone else? PS I guess that if I get bored later on I'll probably just do it, if no-one says otherwise. --Karl Wick 02:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- But some shelves actually have several useable books, such as the video games and programming shelves. I think each link should go to a shelve's main page, headed by a specialist in that category, with news on new books and book development, and a large "featured book" section at the top. Since I think many people who visit Wikibooks are interested in one category (just a guess), a central hub would be useful, and would also focus development. Each shelf would function as its own autonomous unit and would know better which books are complete and which books are needed and not needed than someone not familiar with the subject. Each subject's page would be organized differently. The history shelf could have lists organized by region and time period. The time periods list would only be possible with shelf main pages because it would link to specific pages in other books. Smaller shelves could have a few featured books and links to stubs below them. The Wikiversity:School of Plant Sciences page is sortof what I'm talking about. Even if main pages aren't created, having heads of shelves could be useful for organizing books and deciding which books are the most complete and well written. --Hagindaz 04:34, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

- I like your suggestion for how to organize the grouped subject pages, with higlighted books there, and taken care of by someone especially interested in the subject area. Our main goal is to get people connected with their books with as few clicks and as little pain and confusion as possible. Note: The history books would be better organized by level of the users than period of history. --Karl Wick 01:52, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

- But isn't that what we just stopped doing because the main page became to big! Need a little refreshment then look at Wikibooks:All_Books! No we don't want to go back there. Hagindaz suggestion to upgrade the bookshelfe to little portals seemes a lot better in that respect. As for choosing "usable books" - without a formal way of choosing them - like Book of the Month - I am against. --Krischik T 12:14, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

- This is Karl, the main force between moving the 10 million links off of the front page. I agree, that is not what we want to return to. What we DO want to do, is provide links to the most meaningful pages available. At this point, there are not enough usable books to have links to a dozen or more bookshelves. It makes more sense to work in links to actual books. Some of those links are there already; I'll do some edits and see what y'all think... --Karl Wick 01:52, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

- I know that this debate is winding down, but I want to add that I think the additional links to book don't belong on this template (or the main page), but instead should be either featured books or simply left as something to look up for each bookshelf. The number of seperate bookshelves IMHO is going to grow anyway, and there will be a need to simply keep up with just the growth in the number of bookshelves alone. We don't want to return to the massive number of books on the front page again. --Rob Horning 19:14, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

- No-one that I know of is suggesting putting on massive numbers of links on the front page. My observation is that most of the bookshelves do not have enough good books yet to warrant sending people there. It would make more sense for most of the book areas to include links to real books, and overall eliminate some more of the links here on this template that are more dead ends than anything else. The goal is to direct people to the best books with as little work as possible. --Karl Wick 02:53, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

- I guess I just want this to be on record, and to let future Wikibookians who are working on this what the real reasons for going this route might be, and to suggest a possible course in the future. I would agree that bookshelves ought to have a "featured" book as well, but the current level organization and development of Wikibooks doesn't quite accomodate that at the moment. Far too often stuff like this is "frozen in place" and nobody wants to mess with it. BTW, the main page is really looking sharp. --Rob Horning 03:07, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
