Usage[edit source]

{{user language|fr|N}}

Copy and paste the example code above, and replace "fr" with the desired language's code and "N" with one of the following characters representing your fluency level:

Level Description
0 The user cannot communicate at all in that language.
1 Elementary; the user is able to write very simple questions and statements, and might be able to understand more complex sentences with difficulty. Their vocabulary is limited (excluding understanding based on similarity with other languages).
2 Intermediate; the user can participate in simple discussions using simple sentence constructions, but needs help with more advanced vocabulary or structures.
3 Advanced; the user can effectively participate in discussions with native speakers, and can participate in technical discussions with relative confidence. They have a good grasp of grammar and their errors virtually never interfere with understanding.
4 Near native; the user can read and write fluently and accurately at all levels of normal discussion, including technical discussions. The user can reasonably pass off as a native speaker in written discussion, and makes few errors.
N Native speaker; the user has spoken the language from birth, and has a large vocabulary and an intuitive understanding of grammar. The user can participate in all levels of discussions with ease, and can understand most errors in others' writing.

Customizing the format[edit source]

It is possible to customize the behavior and appearance of the template with the following override parameters (for example, {{user language|fr|N|align=left}}).

align Set the alignment on the page. Possible values are left, center, and right (default). This also sets appropriate clearing, so that the boxes will stack automatically in that position (you can override this with the "css-box" override below).
css-box Apply arbitrary CSS to the box.
css-left Apply arbitrary CSS to the left cell.
css-right Apply arbitrary CSS to the right (main) cell.
category Setting this parameter to empty (category=) displays the language box without categorizing the page. For the opposite effect, categorizing the page without displaying the box, see the {{User language/category}} template.

Translating the template[edit source]

The template provides English text by default. To provide a new translation, you need to create a localization of the template. Some can be found at http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Portal:<language code>. See the instructions at m:Template:User language.
