[edit] How to Proofread our Document
[edit] Stages of Work on any piece of material:
- Reorganize content on page
- Fact-check content on page -- see Talk:Wikijunior_Solar_System/Fact_Checking_and_Citation
- Grade Level -- Bring to our target reader level. Use tools in WORD or at http://www.usingenglish.com/resources/text-statistics.php
- Copy Edit --- Correct Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation
[edit] Process for proofreading a page
Proposal by User:SV Resolution Please add what I've forgotten
- BEFORE proofreading begins: Collect and edit material. Use the usual Wiki "free-for-all" approach.
- "Courtesy Freeze" the content -- put a notice (use a big official-looking, very polite template) at the top of the "frozen" page asking people please to work with the plan -- How about
{{Notice Proofread|Talk:Wikijunior_Solar_System/Proofreading}} (See Below)
- On the pages Talk:.../proofreading page Create a list of assigmnents to do a Stage on a section of a page:
- Reorganize section 1
- Copy Edit top-of-page
- etc.
- People sign up for assignments
- People report back when they have completed an assignment
- Once an assigment is "closed out" -- no fiddling with it!
- When you take up a task, make sure you don't do something that affects the previously-completed tasks. The Copy Edit stage (for example) is not for reorganizing, adding content, or choosing different words. These actions could all "undo" previously-completed work.
- Assigments may have to be reopened later (for example, if an error is found later Copy Edit will have to be reopened. If content needs to be moved from one page to another, the Stages may need to start over from the beginning.).
[edit] Guidelines
- Communication: Contact people on the module's talk page or the person's User Talk page to discuss things like
- Moving material from one section to another, or from one page to another
- Questions about facts or how things are presented -- as with the "weight vs. mass" issue.
- Respect for areas of expertise:
- We all have our own areas of expertise. We should list them on our user pages.
- We must defer to experts in their areas of expertise. We give more weight to a well-informed point of view than to an uninformed opinion.
- We could benefit from the expertise of geologists, astronomers and other scientists, technical writers, elementary educators, grammaticians, librarians, and other kinds of experts. If they offer to improve the book, we need to listen to them when they are talking about things they know very well.

[edit] The Notice
{{Notice Proofread|(name of page with the plan)}} Please have a look at Template:Notice Proofread. Here, because I have made it link to the page it appears on, the links don't look like links -- only bold text. That's the self link feature in action! You can see it in the sandbox and in my sandbox. --SV Resolution 14:25, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
This module, Solar System/Proofreading(Talk) is being proofread prior to publication. Please do not add new material at this time. Please see the proofreading plan for information and discussion. Please read the plan and sign up for one of the assignments.
[edit] Need pages to discuss proofreading plan
Some misguided editor put all the proofreading plans on "Talk" pages rather than "Module" pages, so there is no place to discuss those proofreading plans and their shortcomings and inconsistencies. Metric1000 13:14, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- Be bold! Improve the wiki! Whether you decide to create and link to a subpage or move this page to the main name space, please start the discussion of this proofreading plan and the way it applies to all the modules in this wikibook. Thanks for improving this wikibook. --SV Resolution 13:56, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
