Interesting book. You may find this GNU Forum useful for your project. The forum (hosted by Nabble) currently archives all the mailing list discussions scattered in the many Gnu projects. You can drill into any projects to browse the messages or search for a keyword and find what the Gnu people are talking about. --BrosBerg 23:42, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

Some people looking for another viewpoint on some things to be covered here can check out Open Source and Computer Hacking. Nmontague 01:12, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

  • Suggestion: How about a chapter near the end talking about "Commercial Software versus Open Source."
    • Given your comments about the tone of the book, an obvious theme is "The Empire Strikes Back."
    • I would distinguish the theme of this chapter from the "Cancer" chapter, which would be more a compilation of all the name-calling. SCO CEO Darl Mc Bride's press quotes would be another fertile source for juicy epithets.
    • This would be about specific strategies and tactics commercial vendors are taking to thwart open source.
      • The obvious jumping off point would be the SCO lawsuit, but I think there's a lot more to the story than just lawsuits, actual or imagined.
      • One approach is to co-opt open source "virtues" for proprietary products.
      • Another is to open source parts of their product like, like CA did with Ingres or like BEA Systems did with the framework for Web Logic Workshop.
    • You could do two chapters: one on business stuff, and the other on "dirty tricks" like the SCO lawsuit, potential patent suits, license proliferation, ...

Thanks for your work in starting this project. --brent
