Use singular pronouns (or something else other than plural pronouns) when referring to one person.

Using a plural pronoun is confusing. For example, in the following:

... the leader and follower come together in a sort of
closed position and the leader redirects the follower's
momentum to send them back out.

it's not clear when the leader is sending the follower back out or sending both of them (the leader and the follower) back out.
