[edit] Why Project Management?
Project Management is one of the field that did not get much industry attention. The reason for this is two fold. This subject often associated with another underlying industry, be it a constructional engineering or Information Technology, which acts as a back bone while Project Management makes it successful. The second reason is the benefit is often hidden to gain popularity or even get a credit. When you meet a successful Project Manager, he or she is normally associated with an industry. Though this is not a requirement for Project Management, but it is the fact. Let us face it, you can not identify 'Risks' if you are not familiar with the industry which is a crucial point in successful Project Management. Remember, Project Management Practices can be applied to literally any industry, the missing link between the best practices in Project Management and the industry itself will be the main course of this book. We tell you the bits and pieces of Project Management Practices and use your judgment as to how you can apply this to your industry.
[edit] Is this a new career?
Project Management is not new to us. Project Management exists since civilization and the need is ever growing. As early as third dynasty (2650 BC), when Egyptians build pyramids, they had exactly the same factors we have today – Time constraint, budget and resource. Netjerikhet Djoser was successful building pyramids, just because he used right tool to get the work done - Project Management.

Today, handful of universities offer courses on Project Management. One such course that attain popularity is Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM). There are few certifications out there that give the confident to hiring organization that the holder knows the best practices in Project Management. The accreditation depends on which part of the world you live. US and its affiliated countries recognize PMI's certification while UK affiliates recognize Prince2. Depending on your industry, each organization may follow a slightly different practices which are based on industry standard subsidized level of PMI or Prince2 practices.

If you are aiming at the certification from PMI (CAPM/PMP), then this book covers most of your need. Learn the basics, each process groups and knowledge areas processes thoroughly. As you learn through the prose, you will also learn how this has been applied or applicable to a set of industry – Then try to associate with this knowledge in your industry and advance.

Not at this time. SDL PDU stands for Self-Directed Learning and PDU for Professional Development Unit. As this is currently work in progress book, I have no intention of taking to PMI for a proposal at this time. If this would ever change, you can find the details in this section.
