[edit] Good Start

I just stumbled on to this book by accident, and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed (microprocessor architecture is my main concentration along with embedded systems). However, it is kind of lacking in the department of gate level design of a processor, but then again its very very good, you could call this a developed text by now. I wish I had time to commit to wikibooks, maybe by this winter I will, since this I'll be graduateing this December. I'll try to make some modifications here and there, to make it look more like a textbook when I roam around wikibooks every once in a while. Asm2750 05:45, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] quote

I think it would be nifty to start each chapter with a quote from a person who has designed a microprocessor.

  • Chuck Peddle ( 6502 )
  • Bill Mensch and Kathryn Mensch ( WDC 65816 ). 2 people. (full custom?)
  • Carver Mead and Lynn Conway
  • Chuck Moore
  • Chip Gracey of Parallax, Inc. says some interesting things about the process he used to design a parallel-processing chip. 8 years, 2 people, full-custom down to the individual polygons.
  • John P. Shen
  • John L. Hennessy and David A. Patterson
  • ... etc.

I like this idea a lot. I wonder if we will be able to scavenge the quotes we need from Wikiquote, or if we will have to get them from other sources. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 20:00, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] multi-core

I'm thinking about merging the 2 chapters "Microprocessor Design/Multicore Processors" and "Microprocessor Design/Multi-Core Systems". Or is there some subtle, yet crucial, difference that I'm missing? --DavidCary (talk) 04:28, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

The difference I had envisioned was that one chapter would do with the practice of putting multiple cores on a single die, and the other would deal with the practice of using multiples dies on a single motherboard. With the exception that the busses used to ferry data between the cores in each model are different, the two are very similar in theory. I agree with the merger. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 00:05, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] CPU Design HOW-TO

I emailed Alavoor Vasudevan, asking

I am helping to write a book currently titled "Microprocessor Design".
Do you mind if I copy-and-paste your HOW-TO into my book (giving credit of course)?

His response was

Sure you can.

Is there anything else I need to do before I copy-and-paste the entire contents of his "CPU Design HOW-TO" into this Wikibook? --DavidCary (talk) 04:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
