I can't get the \newtheorem*{..}{...} to work unless I use the amsthm package (that is, using the "*" unnumbered style). This seems to be supported by what I found here: http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/teaching_staff/Smith/LaTeX/resources/amsthdoc.pdf

So, maybe move this to the amsthm section. I don't think it requires the amsthm package, but it does require some package.
