I couldn't insert the μ (micro) sign into a document

I think, it should be covered the text, how can do it.

I think, the math mode is not elegant.

I think you should mention XeLaTeX which allows one to enter unicode data directly into the document. (scripts.sil.org/xetex). It's bundled with TeX Live and other TeX distributions.
