who is this Proffessor James Rachels? The critisisms atributed to him are as far as I am aware as old as utilitarianism it'self and perhaps even older. Foolip, I am glad somebody else is on the case, I have done some work with historical utilitarianism, but am not so good on the modern side.

I applaud the work done on this wikibook, but find the quality of the section on utilitarianism to be unsatisfactory. I write this as notes to myself, so that I shall be able to come back at a later time and make improvements.

  • History of Utilitarianism (Bentham, Mill, Sidgwick).
  • Different types of utilitarianism: hedonistic and preference utilitarianism
  • Utilitarianism and equality (Singer's equal consideration of interests)
  • Utilitarianism today (mainly Peter Singer)
  • Other critiques of utilitarianism (and counter-claims!)
