[edit] Translation

I'm starting a translation of this wikibook to Portuguese. Eventually I may feel tempted to add new stuff or improve this English language version, but never without discussing it with its previous authors or other experts first, so I'll appreciate if someone keep an eye in this discussion table.

Hi Gabriel, please feel free to make any improvements you feel need to be made. I've made most of the edits to this book but am always hoping that what is here can be improved by others. I'd hardly call myself an expert, but I hope that what has been written so far is accurate. Regards. Mattb112885 (talk to me) 00:18, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Matlab and Excel

Hi everyone! Matlab is propietary software and not very usefull for personal purpouses unless you take it from non-legal sources. I suggest to include in the table of contents only open-source software as OpenOffice and Octave. Thanks,--Lupus (talk) 02:23, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Lupus, the original intent is to include software that someone would likely use in a business or academic environment and as much as I am a proponent of open source, it is still true that MATLAB and Excel are more common in industry (and in academia) than open office or Excel. I have nothing against including some things specific to free software (if you would like to make a note of this I would not object at all) but it does not make sense to me to exclude anything that's not, especially since the proprietary stuff is more commonly used. Hi Mattb112885, I'll try this in the book that we're composing in spanish. In part you're right with Matlab, but maybe in the case of Excel the similarities are nearby and it will be more 'open' to introduce them all as "calulous spreadsheets" (or something like it, I guess you have a word for what in spanish is "hojas de cálculo"). Thanks a lot, and great job, Matt! --Lupus (talk) 12:03, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
I agree, I think we can just call them "spreadsheets" and then make a note like (such as Excel, GNUmeric, OpenOffice Calc, etc.) further down the page to let them know that yes it was written for Excel (since that's the most common and it's the one I know best at least, though if someone else knows more about another one's eccentricities they're welcomed to write some stuff about them too) but should be usable with other applications. I'll do this as I have more time, I'm just passing by atm. Do you have a link to the spanish page? I'd be interested in taking a look at it (I do not read or write spanish but that's what google's translator is for!). Regards. Mattb112885 (talk to me) 16:20, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Of course,it's right here. You'll see that is still in the initial phase, I'm too busy now but it's in my plans to finish it. Regards,--Lupus (talk) 16:54, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
