According to a recent discovery in archeology, the earliest musical instrument, which should be probably simple flutes or whistles made from bone, can be traced back to more than 100,000 years ago. Since then, music has been played an important role in our daily lives. People, especially musicians, tend to utilize color words, shimmer, darkness, or even some abstract words, relaxation, repose, to describe music, but not many people really figure out how musical instruments sing. I would like to examine the physical principles and phenomenon behind the veil. For personal interest, I chose violin as my topic. The phonation of violin can be produced through the interaction between the bow and strings, vibration of the body, and air resonating inside the body. I will illustrate the vibration pattern of the strings, which is the famous Helmholtz motion, how the vibration produced by the stings be passed to the body, and the importance of the air inside the body. The principle and phenomenon discovered here can also be analogized to other musical instruments.
