(Joel had put "bone thingy" in the tools section)

do you mean a bone folder? Also, a paperknife can serve as a bone folder, and is an important book making tool by itself. A paper knife is any unserrated knife, an old fashioned butterknife will work, but is usually a little smaller, while metal spatulas are often too large and a little too flexible. 160.94.120.197 18:02, 19 October 2005 (UTC)lotusduck

(and from the types of binding section) - also stiff leaf is a simple binding, this is the binding of old, old photo albums, it's "leafs" have a little measurable width to them, and the binding only involves the leafs, several cuts of book cloth and PVA. It seems like I may have to make pictures or illustrations of this one myself. Or one of you could do it. In doing other simple Japanese stitch styles we could move more into the proper kinds of thread and paper neccessary for accurate recreations of early Japanese books. Also, perhaps there should be something in "perfect binding" on restoring your own paperback books, but should I assume access to a guillotine?

I've been in touch with a binding press maker who has a nice page up on bookbinding techniques, focusing on the fan gluing. Hopefully he will decide to release his work: he has quite a few good photos on his site.
You probably shouldn't assume access to a guillotine, but there's a nice alternative on Douglas Jones's website. His current license is quite relaxed already, so perhaps we should ask him about licensing it to the GFDL. There's boilerplate for that here.--Polyparadigm 00:09, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
