You may use simple boxes instead of circles and then slapping a SubSurf modifier on the model. Or spinning a profile of the whole cup. --DanMan 10:38, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Very confusing and not specific enough.
There are many parts in this tutorial that just simply do not explain what is going on. In te first part it doesn't even say how far to extrude the cube face, because in the picture is is obviously not the same length of the cube. Secondly, when it says extrude 12 more times, once again, it does not explain how far to extrude each face. Some extrusions are extremely long while others are much shorter. This need much better directions.

(Fallen Fate: I think that this is a good tutorial to try out your creativity skills because it allows the user to fill in the blanks so to speak while giving the main idea.)
(User note: i found it much easier to use the spin method that was used to make the simple hat)
[edit] Potential Problem
Although this tutorial is rather unspecific, I was able to use the images, instruction and my own idea of what the author was aiming for to create the "box version" of the goblet. Following this, however, I had significant amounts of grief trying to get the curved look of the cup part of the goblet as shown in the tutorial photo (labeled "Applied SubSurf modifier"). No matter what I tried I couldn't get the SubSurf function to behave the way I wanted it to. The body instead looked like a cylinder with a flat bottom. I used the Set Smooth function like he said and even the smooth ability multiple times, as well as other functions I am less familiar with to try to bevel the bottom part of the container. In the end, the entire problem was remedied with the simple vertex command Remove Doubles. Apparently there were too many excess vertices which interfered with the Subsurf modifier.
I just figured I might save someone out there an hour or so by sharing ...

I found the beginning of the tutorial fine. They didn't specify the amount you extrude and scale by but you sound be able to work it out instead of being spoon-fed
I could not get the base right however.
But what I most found difficult was the extra part. My goblet did not look like the one in the final picture at all. It did not have that "glass" look. Are we suppose to do something with the colour in the plane??

[edit] Problem with Shadow?
I found a surefire way to get that transparent shadow-- open your light settings-whether a lamp, spot, sun, etc. Under "Shadow and Spot", there are two main buttons: RayShadow and Buf. shadow. The default should be Buf. shadow. But Buf. Shadow (shadow buffer) is a plain shadow. Click "Rayshadow" and It will use Raytracing for the shadow, allowing for that perfect Transparent shadow. Note: Render times will extend a little bit more.

The tutorial gets completely confusing for newbies, when people start discussions and adding notes on the tutorial page.
Suggestion: All disscussions, notes, remarks, whatsoever should be moved to this discussion page.

[edit] Streamline the tutorial with functions mentioned in the previous tutorials
I think later tutorials should build on the knowledge from the previous tutorials to speed up learning. For example, in this tutorial we could assume the reader is already familiar with the multi-cut knife tool. If that's the case then the first part of the tutorial is tedious and ineffective. Instead of extruding the same face 12(!) times, we can:
1) make a single extrusion of length 5
2) cut it with the multi-cut tool along the X axis into 10 pieces
3) select unnecessary edge loops and delete them
4) make 2 extrusions on the other side
