Chapter 10: Curriculum Development
Curriculum has been defined differently from multiple perspectives. It is important to understand different types of curriculum. The Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) report provides a curriculum framework for both academically and practically oriented students.
To achieve effective learning, teachers should learn to plan into curriculum in three ways: to design long-term curriculum objectives, daily lesson planning, and adjust the curriculum to meet individual student needs. Students have different ways to learn and therefore different strategies must be utilized to suit students. Technology is becoming a widely used tool and the integration of technology is essential in teaching especially in our special education and ESL departments. The discussion of National Curriculum began in 1980s during Reagan Administration. Curriculum design involves interactions between teachers and students by content areas, assessment, classroom management, application of technology, as well as interactive assessment evaluation and review of teacher performance from administration and peer reviewers.
