[edit] How safe is radiosurgery?

Long term results for benign intracranial lesions:

  • U.Pittsburgh: Abstract — "Long-term results after radiosurgery for benign intracranial tumors." Kondziolka D et al. Neurosurgery. 2003 Oct;53(4):815-21.

[edit] Guideline for doses used in radiosurgery

Doses are prescribed to the 50% isodose line unless stated otherwise

  • Brain metastases: 24 Gy, 18 Gy, 15 Gy for tumors <2 cm, 2.1-3cm, and 3.1-4 cm.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia: 40 Gy (80 Gy maximum dose). Use 4mm target on the origin of the nerve.
  • Acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma): 12.5 Gy
  • Meningioma: 12-14 Gy
  • Arteriovenous malformation: 18-20 Gy

[edit] Treatment planning

  • Conformality index (CI) = PIV / TV = prescription isodose volume to tumor volume.
    • CI should be < 2 for radiosurgery
