When approached, the Snargaluff will throw out spiny branches with which it will attempt to beat those approaching it. By reaching into the opening through which these branches emerge, one can extract unpleasantly pulsating green pods, about the size of grapefruit, which in turn contain wriggling "tubers". Apart from Peeves dropping them on people's heads in the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, no mention is made of their use.

When we first see this plant, Harry, Hermione, and Ron together are caring for a Snargaluff in their Herbology class. The co-operation necessary to harvest pods from the Snargaluff is used in part as a way to smooth over difficulties between Ron and Hermione at that point, and additionally the episode is used to show that Neville, who has harvested his first pod while the Trio are still putting on their protective gear, is quite adept at Herbology in general.

It is commented in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, that along with lesser magical plants like Gurdyroots and Dirigible Plums, Xenophilius Lovegood also has what appears to be a Snargaluff growing in his garden.
