Mathematics for Caribbean Advance Mathematics

[edit] Foreword
As the internet becomes more prevalent and accessible it opens up new opportunities, its also makes one start to question the processes that were created before its rise.Jamaica is one such country that have seen a dramatic increase in popularity of the internet and also in the availability of the internet. Sadly though the majority of our people still hang on dearly onto the traditional methods of performing processes. This by the way is not endemic to Jamaica or the Caribbean, but never the less popularity does not make a 1 + 2 = 4 correct. One such area of concern is that of The Text Books for Our High School Students.
It was fine when I was at school for students to have no choice, but to purchase text books every year, internet access was something we talk about in school or saw on television. But now the lack of an acceptable choice is unacceptable.
I quick perusal through the internet will reveal very little books geared towards, Caribbean students at the High school level, I found general subject material, but i am yet to see a wikibook, or any book that is was written for Caribbean students.that is freely available. As it is now our text books are written by one or two persons. There are a number of disadvantage associated with this namely:
- Persons who write books are often not the best teachers, the best teachers are often busy teaching.
- The books are often written from a single person perspective encapsulating a single person ideas and methods, which more than often does not reflect the collective intelligence of the all the players in the space.
- In Jamaica our books are approved by a few persons, once again, these persons are often not an authority on the subject matter, very often they were in the classroom ,along time ago and rose to there current position because of political skills rather than good teaching skills.
- The current process of creating our text books results in high selling cost,This in also leads other problems.
So this is my position:
- Text Books should be free or very low cost
- Text books should be easily accessible by all.
- The teachers on the front lines should decide what goes into these text books
- The students should have a say in how the material is presented.
- The decision to used a more than one text book should not be constrained by cost.
Ok those are the nice stuff, it's now time to work.
[edit] How will we get this thing be done(The Plan)
- The book will be free, see the wikibooks licence.
- The book will cover all the topics on the CAPE Syllabus.
- All things will be democratic,if you don't like whats going on or the way the book is going, please feel free to go start another book, don't feel offended by this, it will actually be a very good thing for our students, because this type of independent behavior will result in options for our students and for our teachers.so i am actually encouraging this. This is the internet, freedom of expression is the order of the day.
- All are welcome to participate, regardless of your academic achievements or which teacher college you went, your contributions will not be judge purely on its academic soundness, we don't care who you are, if its accepted by the community,we are interested in the contents of your mind.
