Although the right to choose religious circumcision for one's self is non-controversial, the right of a caregiver to consent on behalf of a child for non-therapeutic surgery is more contested.

Generally there are two types of argument: Supporters and Opponents.

[edit] Religious freedom

Supporters: Caregivers have a fundamental right to make religious decisions on behalf of children under their care. The state has no right to limit this in any way.

Opponents: Circumcision is sexual assault and is therefore beyond the caregiver's rights of action against another person. Religious freedom must be limited when health decisions are made on behalf of a minor.
