This textbook was initiated as an output of the EARTHTIME Initiative (, an international effort at improving geochronology. This effort is driven by the geochronology community and this Wikibook is an outreach effort arising from this effort.

Geochronology is a broad subject with a large number of sub-disciplines. The initial version of this Wikibook attempts to cover the main stay of geochronology (U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar) however it would be great if contributors could develop and expand the content to cover topics such as Quaternary Geochronology, Cosmochronology.

This wikibook was initiated as an output from a short course on 'Radio-isotopic dating and Mass Spectrometry' held as part of the GTSnext Marie Curie Initial Training Network ( held in Verbania, Italy, March 2010.
