Slovakia[edit]

  • The first meters exclusive to Slovakia came into use in 1939 when the Germans occupied Czechoslovakia and issued separate stamps for the eastern half of the country. After World War 2 and the reunion of the country, separate stamps for Slovakia were discontinued.
  • In 1993 when Czechoslovakia voluntarily reformed as two states (Slovakia and the Czech Republic) Slovak stamps again came into use.
  • All stamps show “SLOVENSKO” in the frank.
  • For issues between 1945 and 1993, see CZECHOSLOVAKIA.
  • The stamps are grouped according to political conditions at time of introduction:
A - German occupation during World War 2
B - Stamps introduced since independence in 1993

NOTE: A few machines with unchanged Czechoslovak inscription were used for a short period after the re-birth of Slovakia in 1993.
