Papua New Guinea[edit | edit source]

  • The first meters appeared in 1958.
  • License numbers, with “PN” or similar prefix, were used from 1958 to 1972. Meter numbers replaced license number during the conversion from sterling to decimal currency in 1966.
  • No meters have been licensed since 2005 but machines were permitted to remain in use until they became unserviceable. Last seen 2011.
  • Unless noted, all stamps are in red.
  • Sterling (£sd) currency was in effect from 1958 to 1966 and decimal currency thereafter.
  • The stamps are grouped as follows:
A - United Nations trusteeship period, with “PAPUA & NEW GUINEA” in the frank
B - Independent state from 1975, with “PAPUA NEW GUINEA” or “PNG” in the frank
C - Australia franks used in Papua New Guinea without alteration
PO - Stamps generated only by special Post Office machines
  • More detailed information about the meter stamps of Papua New Guinea can be found at the home page of the Interessengemeinschaft Neuguinea www.i-ng.org and the Philatelic Magazine of the Society of the stamp friends of New Guinea http://www.the-papuan-villager.de

GROUP A: Stamps first issued during United Nations trusteeship, 1958 – 1975
[edit | edit source]

  • All stamps inscribed “PAPUA & NEW GUINEA”.
  • In 1966 there were 19 users of postage meters whose machines needed to be converted from sterling to decimal currency. All the machines were withdrawn from service and sent to Australia for the conversion and then returned to the country. The affected meter holders were issued small provisional hand stamps to serve during the interim. The hand stamps read in two lines "Postage Paid PN [#] / [town] T.P. & N.G.". Examples are scarce as the mailers found them cumbersome to use.
