[edit] Explanatory Note

After the initial creation of this textbook we tried to contact universities across the U.S. and the English-speaking world. This was attempted in the last two weeks of class. While we had some success in tracking down email addresses, we did not receive much response and nobody (to our knowledge) adopted this textbook for use in their classroom. I am leaving this page intact (for now) in case we decide to try another round of contacting people. Provophys 02:30, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Letter to physiology instructors

Dear [Physiology Teacher],

I am writing to let you know about a new, free resource for teachers and students of physiology. It is an online human physiology "Wikibook," which you can access at http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Human_Physiology. You are probably already familiar with Wikipedia and the thousands of useful articles there. As a class of pre-nursing students we have organized many of the articles relating to physiology into a single book, and have also added new material of our own. We are nearing the end of our class and are seeking outside review and participation in this unique book. Not only is this textbook free to everyone, but anyone can add to it at any time. We want this to become the world's best introductory physiology textbook. We have not yet reached that goal, but we anticipate that with your help we can move one step closer. As you and many others read and edit this book, we anticipate it will grow in clarity, depth, usefulness, and popularity.

Here is your chance to make a lasting contribution not only to the students in your classroom but to students around the world. Please be bold in updating chapters or modifying how the information is organized and presented. Wikis develop faster when people fix problems, correct grammar, add facts, make sure the language is precise, and so on. If you find a problem, don't just complain about it--fix it! You should anticipate, of course, that others will also boldly edit what you write, for we all want to make this physiology textbook as good as possible.

We invite you and your students to be among the first to review this book, or at least a chapter of it that may be of particular interest to you. The greatest contributions can be made now in the early stages. Every chapter has a discussion page, where you can leave comments and suggestions. We welcome any input or questions you may have. In making changes directly to the content, we encourage you to first create a login id (but you can edit anonymously). If you are unsure about editing, you will find a help link to the left of the book that can help you get started. All changes are logged, and if you create a login id you will be credited with the contributions you make.

We hope you will make your students aware of this free resource. You may want to have students work on a chapter as a collaborative assignment. You may even decide to use this book as your class textbook. Students could read it exclusively online, or they could print out any portion of it. You could even have it bound as as a complete book.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We will try to quickly incorporate any feedback we receive. We are proud of our accomplishments and excited to see what this book can become with your help!

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing what you think!

Sincerely,

~Your Name

[edit] Universities to contact

This is a first attempt to organize contact efforts. If you can think of a better way, please let me know. The easiest way to find colleges for every state is to look at a compiled list, such as right here. However, this list does not help us know which colleges offer introductory human physiology, so it would take a bit of hunting at each one to figure out 1) whether the course is offered, and 2) who is/are the teacher(s) and what are their emails.

[edit] Alabama

Kevin will contact universities in Alabama.

  • I checked into Alabama State University, found they have a College of Health Sciences, and that they do teach human physiology. However, I was unable to determine who actually teaches the class. So, I just wrote a single email to the 7 faculty in the Health Sciences that I could find an email address for.
  • I emailed all the faculty at the Auburn University School of Nursing. Provophys 22:34, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Smoot brothers invade Michigan

Sean and I e-mailed the letter to all of the instructors, professors in University of Michigan's Nursing program. It must be huge because they had about 62 instructors or more if you include non-instructors but I didn't. It took us forever to e-mail them but hopefully we will get some good feedback. Here is the page we got the e-mail links. http://nursing.msu.edu/faculty.asp Bigsmoot 20:14, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Hey we can now add the school of nursing at northern michigan to our list. I am having troubles finding physiology teachers so I have just sent it to the programming directors and the professors asking that it gets sent to the right person. ssmootswiki 00:42, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Oakland University in Michican has now been contacted as well as their nursing program. This time I chose not to e-mail all of the instructors just the anatomy, physiology, and department heads. Hopefully this will return a greater response.http://www2.oakland.edu/nursing/faculty.cfm.Bigsmoot 02:46, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
