GIMP, the free graphics editor is an excellent program for budding online comic artists.

The type of equipment you need depends entirely on what type of comic you wish to create. Below are some basic guidelines for the type of equipment one may use to create comics.

[edit] Hand Drawn Comics

For comics presented on a paper medium, you may need:

  1. Pencil
  2. Paper
  3. Eraser
  4. Ruler
  5. Marker
  6. Stapler
  7. Glue/Tape
  8. Paint

Also, as a side note, some artists ink their comics (Going over, or tracing them with ink) after drawing them in pencil. In which case you may need additional materials such as (these are optional):

  1. Correction Fluid
  2. Some sort of inking pen (marker works)

[edit] Digital Comics

If you would like to transform your paper-based comic into a web-based, online comic, you may need:

  1. Computer
  2. Scanner
  3. Painting program on computer (Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter are popular examples; but GIMP is free)

For creating digital and web comics:

  1. Tablet PC
  2. or Graphics Tablet
  3. painting program on computer
